Jay said it best in my opinion.. if you were to put lyrics on a page and read them you can see the greatness in Big, Nas, Rakim, Lupe lyrically... but Kendrick is just an average lyricist and subpar on certain beats and his flow is mainly what people swoon over...
@bolded thats not a problem. not everyone needs to be Jay/nas level of lyricist. hell Jay and Nas arent even the top of the very top of lyricist(Lupe, Thought, Rass, and Royce take that)

I dont like kendrick but bruh is a above average lyricist atleast hes just not some great lyricist that can outrap everybody in his gen when facts prove otherwise(Krit and Joey outrapping him on 1 train, Sean on Holy Key, Black Hippy tracks, etc)

the issue is how he has no memorable lines/quotable lines

@underline is true tho, plus I think his delievery isnt that good/subpar which I think plays into why he has forgettable lines

his cadence of this robotic, alien voice. Plus who raps in a semi double time semi rambling style doesnt help him in his case of memorable lines.

This is blatantly why we need magazines like the source, I get it, you want to believe that kendrick is this super lyricist, elite artists, one of a kind talent, it's what they're telling you, but...the dudes lyrics are weak. Damn near every rapper has a bag of quotable lines, that have resonated. The fact that people can't seem to name these lines for a rapper that is so good...well, it says something.

You're either trolling or playing dumb. Plenty of people have listed quotables.

Kendricks lyrical ability and his quotables are 2 completely different things :mindblown:

Which argument are you running with :dead:

In my opinion that is a different discussion. Overall lyricism is a better debate than this stupid quotable argument. I think Kendrick is a good but not great lyricist. But you don’t have to be a great lyricist to be a great MC. You can be a good lyricist and excel at other areas. I don’t think Pac was a great lyricist, but he was still a great MC. On the other end Chino XL was/is a super dope lyricist but he lacks in other areas. Voice, flow, content, and overall body of work is important.
Also lyricism is subjective. What hit home with you might not hit me the same way. Some people prefer punchlines, others like story telling. As I mentioned a few post ago Scarface, and 3000 are considered two all time great MCs, but how many universal quotables can most people name?

You know what’s funny? Scarface and 3000 are often overlooked on people’s “greats” list..... people always have to double back like “ahhh shyt I forgot about Face” there’s a reason why.

yep

Pac is a good example. of this, not Jay/Nas level of lyricist. but still a good lyricist. I think Pac's ultimate strength he has in the GOAT convo. Is his "versatility"(in regards to skill and artistry)

and how he could do almost everything and things Nas,Big,Jay cant do

Quotables are highly subjective

so is music but when theres plenty of us in here scratching our heads saying why doesn't the greatest rapper of his generation not have a single quotable bar we instantly associate with him when we think of him ? the only replies are random catchphrases from songs and people trying to downplay the value in having quotables..it's quite telling.

Scarface and Andre were mentioned as people that might be in the same boat as Kendrick but i still think of Face's opening bars on Mind Playing Tricks or with Andre i think of "more fans than the average man but.." part of Elevators..with Kendrick i got nothing but gun sounds or parts of hooks.

it doesn't diminish what he's achieved or his body work as an artist but theres a disconnect.

Quotables are more about delivery and charisma than the actual line a lot of the time
