The claim 20 years ago was that Israel was better for the Ethiopian Jews because of the Regime in Addis at the time but they are learning real quick that home might be better for them.

Both. Israel at the time was willing to bring them into the country as ploy to create "Jew Alliance". The Ethiopians were considered citizens, served in military, normal citizen duties but in reality what they weren't told is that they are 2nd class citizens like the Arab counter-parts and maybe even worse.

The racist ideologies existed since the birth of the country but it took the newer citizens( mainly black) to realize this place is no Utopia of "Freedom". The newer generations of Israelis are told to hate those who aren't of their blood regardless if they are Jews( their religion) or not. The Christians in the country catch hell but it is the African Jews who get it just as bad as the immigrants.

No, she knows she is black by the treatment. However, what's interesting is the reaction/conditioning such behavior evoke from generation to generation of those black jews. The desire to integrate among white jews and set themselves apart from the "typical" Ethiopian will unfortunately be common/popular tactic to the future generations of Ethiopian to avoid the stigma/stereotype/racist treatment
