Van Morrison went through a similar phase, he recorded 31 songs of bullshyt to get out of his contract lol. I remember buying the album for my Dad and him telling me the story and how trash the album was.
I think you're right though Em was balancing a fine line of giving the label bullshyt while also giving his fans some gems. Some of my favourite Em songs are on that album, while it's also one of his worst projects.
The strategy seemed to work though as he got to release his greatest hits and fall back after that.

Bully is a classic. Big Weenie is literally NOTHING like Bully. It's a terrible song and the anithesis of "old Em".It reminds me of that dope song he had called Bully. Damn I miss old em
