the fact of the matter is the Mecca of hip hop sold out the fukk out …and the minute ppl got bored and tired with that shyt the East coast fell off the map and then they ran around with no identity (because they abandoned it ) crying talking about the south killed hip hop when they gave it away years prior and this is the thread where nikkas cop
Pleas and avoid that fact :laff:
Jay-z, Nas, Mase, Biggie, Puff, Kim, missy and Jadakiss sold out and fell off in 97? Cause they were the ones :jbhmm:

And they all had like one outfit at an award and did like 1 video, minus puff/mase. So was it mo money more problems? Can’t nobody hold me down? 112 only you? That killed hiphop :dahell:

NY lost its tight grip on HipHop cause it was unreasonable that such a small percentage of the black population would fully dominate what was evenly spread out over the nation, even world.

How? Jay, Kiss and all them blew the fukk up after, Nas had his biggest album, DMX, Ja, Pun, Dipset, G-unit and I could go on.

No what he said was what one would say if they think they’re onto something when they’re high as fukk. Sounds smart until you think
The "shiny suit era" in New York City hip-hop, which refers to the late 1990s and early 2000s, marked a significant shift in the genre's authenticity and artistic direction. During this period, there was a noticeable decline in the raw and gritty essence that had characterized the city's hip-hop scene. As record labels sought commercial success, there was a greater emphasis on glossy production, mainstream appeal, and flamboyant fashion choices, represented by the shiny suits worn by artists. This era witnessed a departure from the grassroots authenticity that had defined New York City hip-hop, with some artists prioritizing catchy hooks and radio-friendly songs over lyrical depth and social commentary. While the shiny suit era contributed to the genre's mainstream popularity and commercial success, it also sparked debates about the compromising of artistic integrity and dilution of the culture's core values. However, hip-hop's diverse nature has since allowed for the emergence of different artistic movements, enabling the revival of authenticity and the continued evolution of the genre

Big was dead.

Jay-Z 1000% sold out …he’s just a great artist with enough talent to bounce back from weak shyt like I know what girls like and Vol.3,

Nas - :laff: We not gonna talk about it because nikkas gonna catch feelings.

Mase didn’t sell out because that’s who he was

The Lox 1000% did… If you think I’m jiggy exists

Puff is the architect of the sell out .

Hell..Q-Tip sold out

(At that time )The face of New York sold out I have no idea how y’all and sit and say Laffy Taffy destroyed hip hop but act like P.E 2000 don’t exist

That’s literally what selling out is :mjtf:

The quality of rap albums took a steep nosedive after that era …because instead of crafting great bodies of work nikkas chased the bag and the second nikkas got tired of that shyt the EAST for the most part was dead because they sold their soul before any other region did but then they had the gall to say the south did it .

The artists from the pre-shiny era was still there. And they kept on going gold or less.

People act like Ultramagnetic MCs and Jeru were moving 5 mill.

Gang Starr, Mos, Ghost, Talib, mobb or whoever you want were still there, as were KRS and whatever. But they were not moving 5 million, as they never did. The analysis is highly flawed. And besides that it was far before Puff that rappers in NY tried to make pop hits, unfortunately they weren’t very good at it unlike Puff.

It's deeper than snazzy clothing and party music, that has ALWAYS been a stable in Hip Hop culture.

What effect?

People act like Puff created sampling

Also deeper than sampling. Funny enough, given the title of the song...

Me and Puff, we was chillin in Miami
He said "nikka fukk the underground, you need to win a grammy"
For your mama and your family, they need to see you shined up

You built a mighty high ladder, let me see you climb up

Keep in mind, even around the time the era in question started, rappers, big, mainstream rappers were STILL boycotting or downplaying the grammys. But here Puff is, telling Jay E, someone who clearly suffers from imposter syndrome and lofty expectations that he NEEDS TO WIN A GRAMMY TO VALIDATE HIMSELF AS AN ARTIST

That's what the whole 'theory' is about. Style over substance, forgoing artistry for accolades and validation from people outside of the culture. For somebody like Jay-Z it worked and balanced out just fine. For Jay E, who despite his industry connects could be considered 'underground' dropping dope music for the sake of dropping dope music and furthering the genre has taken a backseat.

This. Rappers was always trying to get paid and get fly. Of course a segment emerged that was against all that but it was kinda short lived

nikka what you scared of?
Terrorize these artificial rap nikkas and spread love
Pollinate they ear buds
Like you supposed to, spit it for the culture
Pay no attention to the critics and the vultures
They rather have a shot of Belvy just to spite you
They casting judgments 'cause they feel they got the right to
fukk 'em, I let the dice roll like The Father did
I gotta shine, it's in my blood, I'm a Harlem kid
I treat my babies right, treat my ladies ladylike
Hit them with a remix to make sure that they play me twice
I thought you said it's the return of the black kings

Luxurious homes, fur coats and fat chains

The South popularized the strip club and tricking on hoes. :unimpressed:
