who woulda thought back in 1995 that Sega would be the last folks in Nintendo's corner during it's downfall?

Those oldschool Sega Genesis commercials sonning Nintendo back in the day were :ohlawd:

It's been an interesting week for the Nintendo Wii U, but ultimately another bad one. The platform secured three new Sonic the Hedgehog games as exclusives while losing software support from Electronic Arts.

If this was 10 years ago, the Sonic announcement would have been huge. Now, though, we've got Sonic as an exclusive for a platform that just lost EA support. The last time that happened was with the Dreamcast, and things are looking tough for the Nintendo Wii U, too.

As many have noted, EA isn't as big a publisher as it was back when it essentially sentenced the Dreamcast to death, but it's still a major company whose support is important. As Matt Martin notes over at GamesIndustry International, though, it simply doesn't have money to throw around anymore. The company has its own problems, and it needs to spend where there's money to be made.

The Nintendo Wii U simply isn't a place where that's possible right now. It could be in the future, if Nintendo somehow manages to plug all the holes in its increasingly leaky ship, but the longer that takes and the longer it goes without major third party support, the harder and harder that mission becomes.

"EA has pulled out of the Wii U because sales of both hardware and software are dreadful," Martin wrote. "We're not officially allowed to report sales numbers from Chart Track in the UK but everyone in the publishing business can see them quite clearly. There's no need for pretence. When you can get to number one in the Wii U charts by selling less than 1,000 units it's no longer a tragedy, it's an actual farce."

What's more, Martin writes that the Wii U's issues run deeper than a simple lack of software. The original Wii was a system that intuitively tapped into something anyone would be intrigued by and want to try - motion control. The Wii U doesn't capture the imagination nearly as well.

"The Wii U has been defeated by the most humbling of challengers - consumer apathy," Martin adds.

"The mainstream bought the Wii because it was a fun novelty, they didn't buy it for a new Zelda game. What's the Wii U's novelty? That it does everything a current-gen console does but a little bit slower and with a Fisher Price tablet attached?"

Interestingly, Martin says that even if Nintendo were to show up at E3 with Mario, Zelda, and Starfox in tow, it would be overshadowed by Sony and Microsoft. Outlets want and need to cover things that will hopefully lift the video game industry out of the doldrums its currently in, and so far the Wii U does not fall into that category.

He has a point. As of now, the only kinds of headlines the Wii U is generating consistently are for awful numbers, lack of software, and missed expectations. Nintendo is trying to plug the gaps with new software announcements, but even then, the next big game arriving is Pikmin 3 in August. That's still two and a half months away, and let's face it: As much as I personally like the Pikmin series, it's not going to move systems at the pace Nintendo needs, if at all.

The video game industry is at an interesting crossroads. Many feel that traditional consoles need to make a very convincing case for why they're needed in a world where you can buy titles for a dollar on your phone. If Nintendo can't make that case with the Wii U, then it's no surprise that consumers and third parties will abandon it.

you understand the Wii sold more units than the Xbox 360 and PS3? its got each of them beat by like 15-20 million units sold.

if you limit the scope to just North America and just years after the Wii was basically abandoned by Nintendo then the Xbox sold more in those years but world wide life to date its like 100 million Wiis to 78 million or so Xbox 360s as of March 2013.

i saw an ad before that video which means the channel is partnered which means dude did it for the views.
So the fukk what, why are you literally hiding behind numbers that doesnt prove a point for you? You was under the impression that the Wii would be fine. Reality is the Wii was doing terrible to the point its successor is already here. Wii sales came to a grinding halt. Now its successor is going thru the same reality. If you wanna bring up sales, Wii-Sports sold over 80million copies :lupe: I guess all Nintendo needs to do is release Wii-Sports Wii-U and they'll move at least another 25million Wii-U's immediately according to your logic. But we all know the truth, and you also know that the wii which has sold 22mil more units than the xbox/ps3 as of today will finish dead last. Neither of those system have even hit the $100 price mark yet. The ps2 for instance sold over half its systems once the ps2 hit the $129 price point. 3rd parties have already stated they will make all new games for next gen and previous gen systems I.E. Call of Duty: Ghost. Battlefield 4, you name it. I think its time you admit to yourself you was wrong don't you think :flabbynsick:

the goal is to sell the most product and last generation Nintendo sold the most product by a long shot. your response is so the fukk what. at the same time you're trying to argue that in some scenarios Microsoft sold more product than Nintendo.

you like one of them cats that when their hoop team loses a playoff series you're saying "yeah they won but we were the better team." all that really matters is who won and who lost not who feels who was better.

You want to sell the most consoles in order to sell the most games (where you really make your money, off licensing fees). The 360 has been kicking everyone's ass when it comes to selling software the last couple years. Nintendo sold all those consoles and nobody is doing shyt with them and in fact people are left with such a sour taste in their mouth after the Wii experience they are completely avoiding its successor.

In the past the console that sold the most units also sold the most games so it was easy to declare a winner. This gen that didn't hold true as everyone bought the same 5 games for the Wii then it became a dust collector for the past few years. MS is still raking in dough by being the leading platform in terms of game sales. They make money just from selling live subscriptions and watching people buy CoD.

Thank twitter for giving an avenue for developers to speak on consoles with true honesty instead of the generic company answer.

Remembers Goldeneye for N64, so PIFF at it's time.

last i knew the Wii never lost any money off consoles sold so they were making a profit off consoles and games sold and Nintendo has multiple titles in the top 10 best selling games of all time that are Wii titles. some were pack-ins and some weren't. example Wii Fit and Wii Fit+ combine for over 40 million sold. Wii Play was close to 30 million (mainly due to the extra remote) both Brawl and Galaxy 1 crossed 10 million.

Nintendo's issue is they sold many of those consoles to people who weren't games and people who weren't gonna go out and but a third or forth piece of software. after Wii Fit and Wii Play and having Wii Sports, Mario Kart they didn't want any other games.

i own a Wii and even i don't own all the best software for it. i've never owned Mario Galaxy 2, Mario Kart, or Twilight Princess for example. my Wii sat there most of the generation not being used but even i can't front like i own all the worthwhile titles for it.
