Why are you so mad at this thread, though? The OP is just trying to help people out. Why do you have to try and shyt on his thread for that?
The times arent calling for expensive shoes. Companies are not giving out plush raises like that these days. Over a hundred million Americans are Not working. If you black in corporate America you better be a little moist friendly, take the bass out your voice, wear some pastel colors, sound like Bryant Gumble, be unable to relate to other black people, be a snitch or straight up gay, if you're trying to go places. If you find yourself getting 2-5 percent raises every year, its not the shoes, its just mandatory business practices. Maybe things are different on Wall Street, in sales, IT or in the law offices of da dun da dun. Just what ive seen from experience. Its not the shoes its the ideas and money generating. O, and your skin color to.

Advice: Go for comfort. These days, there are plenty of good looking shoes and suits decent prices. Find the shoes that feel the best and fit the best. You will walk better, be in a better mood when comfortable and interview better. Find a suit you can afford. Jos A Bank usually has great deals. Look for a Haggar Factory Outlet. They make great men's clothes and usually the factory outlet has great fitted suits for cheaper than you think a decent suit can be, and its much better quality than department store stuff. Kohls sells their stuff too. Keep them pressed and cleaned and keep a comfortable pair of shoes just for interviewing. The expensive stuff is for established professional positions. When starting out or changing careers, many just want to know that you care enough about the position to put yourself together. Different from higher up positions that may be looking for a certain image.

Dog, the managers at my company making big money dress basic as hell. Off the Rack suits and average dress shoes.

Fashion at the work place is so fukking overrated. As long as you don't stand out like an idiot, you will be good.

I was just having this conversation with a young brother at the job recently who felt the same way you do. I had to explain to him that management and senior management is already established at the next level and they have other nuances to deal with as far as the advancement of their careers.

As a black man, you should always strive to be well dressed in the workplace. It does wonders for other's perceptions of you, consciously and sub-consciously.

America is one of the only first-world countries that still hold on to that suit and tie shyt.

Okay brehs. Before someone catches a stray from the zingers flying back and forth in this thread, let me intervene...

1. It is true that clothes are comparatively insignificant compared to what you know and what you do

2. However, in a collaborative environment any sort of signaling matters, especially to people you are not around every day

3. It really depends on your role. If you're a programmer on the west coast it matters less if you don't dress sharp. You can make a ton of cash in jeans and hoodies. If you're into sales or management then you'll need to step it up a bit. Take cues from your environment and where you want to go.

4. Formal clothing can actually make you look better objectively. Even if you work out and all that, a collared shirt can give you a great silhouette compared to a t-shirt.

5. Good shoes last for ages. And can be repaired even many years later. Worth the investment.

in correct - America is one of the least formal work enviornments in the world. You go to China, Japan, India, south America, the Caribbean, England, most of Europe - these guys are still wearing full suits in most professional work environments - even the lower class is expected to wear dress shirts and ties or basic suits.

American imo started the move away from formality in the business culture - so it makes no sense why you think other first-world countries have leaped frog ahead of America in that regard.

fuk a suit...:manny:

That being said, dress appropriate for your work and two positions above you is what I say. Check your bosses boss, if he's in a suit, you should be a in a suit. Outside of that I would say dress for the job you want not the one you have and you should be fine.

AND YES, bad shoes will fuk up a whole suit.
