So I've been growing my hair out for the last 14 months or so and accumulated a good 7-8 Inches of hair. I'm getting a little tired of the soul fro and i'm about to switch it up to dreads. Tell me about y'all experiences with dreads, Maintenance tips, Misconceptions people may have had and the spiritual freedom being locked up has given you... Put a breh on to what I should expect.

Goon Lookin' out:birdman:

7 or 8 inches? you shoulda been twisted em up, you can still have em lookin right but a lot of nikkas prefer to start em off earlier so they come in better and you dont gotta get em retwisted as much....you gonna have to prolly get your shyt twisted back up every other week just to keep em right at that length

as far as maintenance, dreads get a lot of hate from simple nikkas who dont wash their hair....when you startin em off you gotta be careful not to do too much but once they locked in you can just wash your hair the same way you regularly do and treat it like normal...

just dont use any shampoos or conditioners that might leave any kind of residue in your hair since it will build up fast and leave nasty smells and white spots in your shyt

nikkas in the street think they can twist they nappy shyt up and just neglect washin they shyt anymore, got a scalp greased up lookin like lebron blew some chalk on it and some ol filthy dreads smellin like mustard

The "ugly stage", or the "ugly phase" is inevitable, and unavoidable. You can mask it with a hat or something, but there's no getting past it unless you get weave or fake dreads.

Go the natural route, and climb that ladder to loc success.

You apreciate them so much more :noah:

the evils of truth, and love
wash them really well and frequently and make sure you rinse all the shampoo out and dry as much as possible and dont forget to lift up the undersides of your locs and pat dry there alot of excess water can easily get stored up there

get them a little larger than what you want them to be because they will get more lean over time and solid

never use beeswax

if you twist dont twist all the way to the scalp or they will start thinning and fall out when they get heavier

Deep in the south kickin uptop game
April will make 3 years for me, it's kinda weird because I thought I was fly wit my ceasar but I've never been as comfortable in my own skin as I am wit dreads. I prefer the rugged look but going too long between retwists caused alot of them the get thin at the root and break so I try to get twisted every 2 to 3 months. My only advice would be have patience and NO BEEZ WAX

I will warn you about this, as a black male dreads will put you in a completely different class as far as profiling

Loc'd up for almost five years. Contrary to popular belief, water IS your friend. Clean locs=good locs.

Let your hair breathe.
Don't over twist
Avoid products that have petroleum in them.

NO BEESWAX...if you use it

nikkas been locking their hair with beeswax for over 100 years easy, now all of a sudden nikkas is off that?
