You've completely removed all context surrounding the reaction to those disses.

Nobody had time to really process Family Matters when Meet the Grahams hit, with folks being caught unawares, thinking how the hell did Kendrick reply so soon and naturally they're going to gravitate towards listening to that because it's more of a surprise. It was the shock of responding so soon that got cats' attention; popularity has little to do with it.

It was a genius move because Kendrick didn't allow the public to consume and digest Family Matters before giving us something hot off the stove.

Also gotta keep in mind that people re-listen to songs they like I maybe listened to Family Matters 10 times, probably less. I listened to MTG countless times. Literally had the shyt on repeat at some point.
