Nah, they searched earth too and he wasn't there (for obvious reasons). They specifically told Frieza that they searched Earth as well as other planets but the only two full-blooded Saiyans they could find were Goku and Vegeta.

Since Frieza wasn't able to locate Trunks, he went after Goku.
