XI:S and 8 are both consensus top 5 DQ games(a lot of people have them top 3).
Does it have modern rpg QoL features and does it also have random encounters?

DQ8 has random encounters if you play the original version. I believe the newer 3DS version doesn't.
I personally prefer the PS2 version tho.
DQ11 is the newest game tho so it's as modern as DQ gets.

1. XI:S yes has QoL features and all enemies are on screen.
2. 8 is a PS2 era game that has random encounters. Still a really good game though. I'd suggest playing 8 before XI because XI will make 8 damn near unplayable for you.
Ehh...I thought DQ11's walk around combat system was absolute ass so I played in turn based mode. It made DQ11 and 8 feel pretty similar.
I didn't play 11S but I saw the games as equals. 8's charscters, monster raising system and alchemy system I really liked and I missed in 11. But 11 has a better story and postgame.
I sorry I was referring to XI:S
never 8, I found that antiquated even when it originally came out.

Also the definitive version situation was a mess. Basically had to abandon the graphically superior ps4/xone version of the game to get all the extra features because nintendo paid for timed exclusivity for that specific version and we got the port of that one.
