(Reuters) - Bill Gates attended to a bit of unfinished business on Thursday.

Gates, who dropped out of Harvard and co-founded Microsoft Corp. to become the world's richest person, stopped off at his former stomping grounds to collect an honorary law degree.

"We recognize the most illustrious member of the Harvard College class of 1977 never to have graduated from Harvard," said Harvard University Provost Steven Hyman. "It seems high time that his alma mater hand over the diploma."

"I've been waiting for more than 30 years to say this, Dad, I always told you I'd come back and get my degree," Gates, 51, told the crowd, which included his father, also named Bill.

"I'll be changing my job next year, and it will be nice to finally have a college degree on my resume," said Gates in a reference to his plan to shift full-time into philanthropy.

Was that not wildly disrespectful to all the Harvard graduates in the crowd who put in work to get their degrees?

People receive honorary degrees all the time. You can't be cool with one and not the other. Its hypocritical. Sounds like you just have a problem with Diddy I'm willing to bet that even if he had gotten his degree, you'd find another reason against him speaking, like the manner in which he made his money.

People receive honorary degrees all the time. You can't be cool with one and not the other. Its hypocritical. Why should anybody have a problem with it? Most People go to college because they hope to use their degree as a way to propel them to success. Most people would also be happy to have 1/5th of Diddy's success in life

The issue is that no one cares how people attain success or how we define that very same word. Societal issues indicate that obviously we are doing something wrong. Our value system isn't conducive to progress or a sustainable society. But I digress

Please describe exactly what's wrong with how Diddy attained success. Last I heard he wasn't robbing people, killing people, and I don't think he's ever been in prison. So what exactly is wrong with how he attained success?

lets be reality, its not like Dr. Combs getting his degree is gonna be the difference between someone with an "earned" degree getting a job or not.

If anything, it's just recognition.
