You also gotta consider tho' that these are two different eras... Michaels wrestled in an era where he faced other stars week in and week out on TV, and then on PPV every month. In many ways, Michaels has outperformed Savage... but given the circumstances. Savage on the other hand (in his prime) worked TV with jobbers, SNME with other stars, lots of house shows with matches we'll probably never see... and PPV a few times a year. There's not as much stuff out there to call classic compared to Michaels'. Savage coulda been putting on classics every other night with Santana, DiBiase, Roberts, Steamboat, etc... shyt, he might have a 5-star match with Beefcake for all we know. But all we have are the ones that were televised.

Look at it like this: we can bring up Michaels' prime years... the mid-90s, and his second run. But in his Rockers days (late-80s/early-90s) ain't no way they didn't kill it with Arn & Tully or the Rougeaus or the Hart Foundation on several occasions. But how many of these matches were prominently featured on TV? If they ran TV then like they did post-'95, we'd have more shyt from those times to talk about. And Savage probably woulda been shining like crazy every Monday.

If you have no frame of reference of Randy Savage outside of WWF/E and WCW then you have no idea about his feud with Jerry Lawler or The Rock n Roll Express or against the members of The Hart Family or his time in Puerto Rico or in his dad's IWA promotion. All of which produced matches that are considered good to great.

Macho turning face in LA at WM 7 is bigger than Michaels career..the Cobra bite angle is more legendary than Shawn Michaels in general.

the number of classic matches determines whether or not someone was better?

what do you value more, quality or quantity?

First off, most of those matches aren't considered anywhere near classic. They only mention the Bret/Shawn match at times these days and the 2 Taker matches. That's about it.
Shawn Michaels retired in 2010 without a whimper or care. He comes back to indifference and boos. Mick Foley out popped him last time out? Yikes. Hideous. That's no GOAT. That's just a guy showing up past his due date.

But we aren't talking about who was the bigger star, but wrestler. Many consider an HBGOAT/Taker I to be the best wrestling match EVER. We still talk about the influence of the WMX ladder match.

:laugh: Ain't no fukking Undertaker match considered the best ever..they tried to push Taker vs Punk as better than Rock vs Austin before Punk left and the crowd booed it harder than Cena that night.

Personally, I didnt like anything Macho Man did in WCW.

So my vote is going with HBK.

HBK has the better classic catalog.

Mach has the better catalog of angles.

At the end of day, you can make an argument for either one being better than the other.
