Does anyone else feel like solo comic book films are suffering from having universe building?

Personally I don't mind it as long as it's done right

I agree with you about IM 2 being a bit lame (I don't think I've watched it again in full since it first came out), but like @jayshiggs said the movies are just mirroring the comic structure

I like the idea of there being a bigger world than just in their solo films, but if it's done entertainingly

Thor: The Dark World is a perfect example of how to do it poorly :francis:

Not all comics are structured this way though. In fact the majority are not.

Yes team ups and cross overs and such happen but self contained stories are abundant. And they are better for it.

I felt like phase 1 of the MCU was more self contained. Now it's starting to feel gimmicky trying to shove every character in every movie.

What happened to just a well done villain and plot for 1 hero?

Bvs shoe horned a bunch of shyt in and was a worse film for doing so.

Solo films arent suffering because of universe building, some of them suffer because the writers dont want to lift a story straight from the comics. They use the comic as a baseline to do their own thing. When they do that you now have 2 versions of an underlying narrative/character and often the movie version is worse. Im not sure if its a vanity issue or a publishing issue.

Its not like comic movies were known to be great before they started trying to do the shared universe thing.

You dont feel Bvs, asm 2 or iron man 2 were worse films for shoe horning in the world building?

Nah...they're comic book movies and are doing their best to mimic the comic books, that means stories CAN connect.

For instance that Dr. Strange movie, being a sort of an origin story will be able to stand on it's own, open up a new "dimension" and genre within the MCU and still connect to the overall story. What's the problem with that?

I will admit I am bias in the sense that as a kid my favorite comics were always self contained smaller stories.

The team ups and cross overs have always felt gimmicky to me.

I don't want studios to feel like the only way to go forward is to pile tons of characters in every film.

I cant necessarily blame world building for the quality of those films as Man of Steel was mediocre on its own, so was ASM1. There were plenty of bad Batman films with no shared universe, Green Lantern was awful, so was Catwoman, Elektra, every Fantastic 4, and on down the line.

Winter Soldier and Civil War were great precisely because they included the stories from the previous films. Also as seen from Ant-Man there are ways to share a universe without including everyone who exists in said universe and make an enjoyable movie.

Nothing wrong with that you misinterpret what I mean.

My complaint would be if marvel felt the need to place a scene with black widow or something in the film just because. Or throw iron man in because he makes money. You're taking away from the story unnecessarily.

The way it was obvious that they shoe horned in falcon in the ant man film.

Or wonder woman opening that email.

Na, they are molding the movie business into something similar to comic books. Adventures happen but we all know the next issue is coming. It doesn't ruin comics.
A self contained movie is limiting and only leaves you 2 - 2.5 hours for character development/plot/action. Similar to the Netflix shows you have multiple hours of screen time to develop all those. Tony Stark character arc is epic, he has done a 180 since Ironman and it is all because of the various events that have happened throughout the MCU. It could never happen in one movie.
:wow:

Bad films exist in and out of shared universes.

Those films in particular though suffered precisely BECAUSE they wrote in the world building and fukked up the pace of the films.

Many studios? Name them.

You're wrong because a TV show like daredevil has one long continuous story. Episodes are not self contained. These movies are 99% self contained with thin threads being shoe horned in to the detriment of each films story just to connect them daredevil doesn't have to shoehorn in anything its one goddamn story.

Like seriously :wtf:

It's the whole reason Edgar wright left he didn't want his film to sacrifice just to shoe horn in other shyt
Warner Brothers/DC
WB/Legendary Godzilla, Skull Island, etc.
Universal's Monster Movies Dracula, Mummy, Invisible Man
Disney/Star Wars
Sony/Valiant comics

so each episode isn't self-contained on Daredevil? How isn't that bad TV making if doing the same in movies is bad movie making?

What's Edgar Wright doing now? Is Baby Driver coming soon? As you can see one monkey don't stop no show. :win:
