All kidding aside, today is a sad day for Major League Baseball and baseball fans alike.
We’re getting to the point in the game where stars are harder and harder to come by, so to lose a player of this magnitude is a grim thought. Look, I’ll admit it, for years I hated the guy. I hated the fact he played for my rival and not for my team. I flat hated how he always seemed to have the knack to break my heart right when I thought the game was over. Every. Damn. Time. He was a thorn in my ass, but -- can’t believe I’m saying this -- I’ll miss it. I just… I don’t know… Today is the end of an era.
It’s been overstated, but this friggin guy always played with class and grace and I always respected his abilities. You’d have to be a fool not to. The guy was great. Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, All Star, .800+ career postseason .ops, etc. What more do I really have to say? Sure, his defense was questionable at times. Sure, he probably stuck around a little longer than he should have… but can you really fault him? Not only was the guy an ambassador to the game, he was an ambassador to his country. He was a leader. Young players looked up to the guy, and will for years to come. You could tell his smile alone was enough to inspire… that’s corny, but it’s damn true. You can’t put a price on clubhouse leadership; it’s one of the most underrated aspects of sports. He commanded “respect” his entire career, not this fake “re2pect.” He didn’t need a pushy advertising gimmick to tell us that, because we all knew, and we all respected him, whether secretly or openly.
I’ve made it a mission to watch as many of his games as I could this year, and while he didn’t have the numbers, you could still tell the skill and passion were still there. I legitimately believe he could have played a couple more seasons. I guess we’ll always have YouTube highlights, but they don’t tell the whole story.
I’m actually kinda emotional about this, because more than anything I’m a fan of the sport first and foremost. I’m a fan of baseball more than I am a fan of the Mets or any single player. This sucks, truly. I don’t know what else to really say but to congratulate the man on a great career. I thank you. New York thanks you. My deepest thanks for the memories -- good and bad -- and I hope you enjoy retirement and the boatloads of cash you earned yourself. It was well deserved. Here’s to you, Bobby Abreu.
That was a great ending and I'm glad I saw it.
also, I'm posting this tomorrow on facebook - is there anything else i should mention?
that's a rough draft, I'll work on it in the morning. I love trolling
