Winter late 93 going into Summer 94, it was all about Buckshot, Jeru, and Nas. And this wasn't just a mere underground thing. This what n1ggas in the streets were bumpin out of every whip or stereo
Exactly. He was good with or without PremoI seriously don't believe a person that calls Jeru "average" and basically tries to relegate him as some d-list rapper carried by beats, has heard a lot of his work in the 90's. With and without Preem. Very capable and commanding MC. His style could be slightly obtuse but he was vicious.
I'll say this, not everyone is an elite lyricist, but what a lot of MC's have in order to mask their limitations is charisma. Thats how they maintain relevance and interest. They can will their lyrics to sound good. Jeru is about as uncharismatic as it gets, which makes the rest of his lack of skill set all the more glaring. Any decent MC could sound good on 'Come Clean', 'D'original', 'Mind Sprays', etc...Jeru was exposed quickly w/o elite preemo production backing him.

Jeru wasn't better than BIG but he defintely wasn't average.
