GOTG are part of Marvel, but still a separate entity from say Ironman, Thor, Strange, etc. And the GOTG are an odd group of characters that all bring something to the table. Plus they were new that the casual movie goer did not know.
Yeah, Solo wasn't a bad movie. But it wasn't good either. Okay we saw how he met Chewy and he made the Kessel run. And?
They have canon? Dig into that and lift stuff from that for some new characters and stories not yet seen on screen. That is what Marvel does.
People are stretching Star Wars too thin with these Obi, Boba, Lando spinoffs ideas. That is still the old regime.
Star Wars franchise is stuck. With TLJ, they tried to drastically move away from the legacy characters. Too abrupt of a change. At the same time, they can't stay with the same legacy forever or people will get tired too.
Rogue One was the closest at charting some new territory and at the same time doing it well. It wasn't until the end they connected it with original trilogy.
