As a kid my dad was more of a comic head than me. Never could get into them until later but I'm more of a manga head.

Comics have always been a niche market, but 70's babies & (early) 80's babies all dabbled in them when they were young. Hell, they were less than $1 and easily attainable in the market. But you grow out of them. By your pre-teens, you rarely find anyone that read them. Especially in the hood, that ish is unheard of. Ironically, that's when I was into heavy. But I did stop around '93, picked back up briefly in college in '99, and been reading seriously since '05. Hell, I still keep my collection mostly hidden.

I loved to read and draw when I was a kid so I was naturally attracted to comic books. My family traveled a lot so comics also would keep me occupied on long flights and road trips. If I remember correctly my first comics was new warriors and silver surfer. Night Thrasher was actually my favorite super hero for the longest time.

I wasn't into them myself. Might've had a few here and there but it was mostly cartoons and movies for superheroes. Comics weren't that popular. I did have a friend who's dad was a huge collector. He had a room in their house filled with comics and memorabilia. Kept everything in mint condition too.

I collected as I'm older as well.. maybe older than you since you said were in HS in the 90s and I graduated 90..

Comics fell off in the 90s because shyt turned to gimmicks... I got tired of the constant #1s then #0 then the Variant Cover and this new separate mini series.... as a collector it got expensive and I know a few others who felt the same way...

the 90s cartoons (xmen, spiderman, ironman, etc) just added to my comic lore.. its not the only lore I know (insert Bryan Singer here)

When X-Men #1 re-launch came out in '91 it was a huge deal with all the variant covers. As I kid I was thinking it was gonna get me paid years later like a Michael Jordan rookie card. Instead, today I can't even get $15 on Ebay for the complete set :flabbynsick:

When I was a kid there were no comic book stores in my neighborhood. But I think Scholastic had a partnership with Marvel so whenever they would come to my school I'd always try and buy as many Marvel/Scholastic books as I could. They weren't traditional issues but they were complete stories tailored for a young audience.

TBH I wasn't interested in the actual comics because they were too confusing.

Didn't get into comics until I was in high school. It was Transformers, some Gi Joe, some TMNT, video games and more transformers. Hell I still buy transformers to this day.

I got into comics cause the school didn't want you reading them.
So I was like why? Which made me search them out.

Its funny seeing kids play card games now all casually and not realize that they have that right cause ppl like me fought for it back in the 90s.
I was like one of the dudes getting the hose turned on him in those civil rights photos.
Cause when I was growing up if you played Magic the Gathering the teachers would try and throw youe cards away and say you were worshiping the devil.
:dead:

They would take your comics away and say they rot your brain and other nonsense.
Then they would try and get you to recite the pledge of allegience and write an essay on how great Christopher Columbus was.

So comics let me know mad early that teachers were full of shyt.

I've never read a comic in my life.

Didn't know anybody growing up that was into them either (Or, if I did, they never really told me about them).

I'm hoping that this "societal nerd phase" passes.

Yeah, i never read any comics. Most of my knowledge of the characters came from the cartoon shows and video games. I would briefly look at the pictures in the Wizard magazine one of the kids would bring in at school.
