Like we all grew up fukking with the characters in the 90s from cartoons, movies toys: Batman, X-Men, Superman, Spiderman etc
But was anyone else just not around actual comic books as a kid? I didn't own any and I didn't know a single kid that collected them in my neighborhood or at school. Every once in a while somebody might have ONE, but I didn't know anyone with a collection or who followed them. Or if I did, they didn't talk about em much.

The public library had a bunch and I used to look thru them and be more confused than anything. Like "this isn't the Wolverine from TV, where's Morph". Video games were a much bigger deal when I was growing up...

And this isn't a cac/black or hood/suburb thing either, cuz I'm pretty sure a higher percentage of black people are comic book readers compared to white (per population). I feel like its an age thing. Comic books were bigger for 70s babies than 80s babies.

Thats the biggest surprise about this comic book movie craze to me. Just how many diehard comic book heads were out there like Ta-Nehisi Coates, Combat Jack, Method Man etc. That wasn't a thing for me growing up. We had sports video games and hip hop...

I saw more Pogs than comic books as a yute

Same, i grew up loving the movies/tv shows..my best friend is the only one I know that messed with them cause hed stay at his dads house in the summers, who lived nxt to a comic store...im not within 15 miles of a store and everytime id get "an issue" id be pissed it wasnt a full story. Id rather read books than pay 2.99 for a chapter so to speak.

That being said, now that im older and have access to things such as amazon, as well as easier to find full story archs, i read alot of comic books.

Growing up in Europe the only I saw on the reg was a weekly Disney comic featuring Donald Duck, Scrooge, Mickey Mouse and such characters.

I am older than most of the board and read comics as a kid. But this was early 80's. Read them through the early 90's. During the 90's comics fell off pretty bad so I lost interest. Plus got older, was in high school, etc. so I outgrew them.

What's funny is I'll be talking to a younger person about the MCU or DC movies or whatever and they'll be shocked that I know all the characters. Most younger people don't seem to know that Thanos or Harley Quinn ain't new characters.

This was another surprising fact I learned later in life but it makes sense. I didn't know that people clown the Rob Liefield style with the huge crazy muscles and the pouches and bullet holders everywhere until I read it on The Coli...I thought it was just normal comic book shyt.

I collected as I'm older as well.. maybe older than you since you said were in HS in the 90s and I graduated 90..

Comics fell off in the 90s because shyt turned to gimmicks... I got tired of the constant #1s then #0 then the Variant Cover and this new separate mini series.... as a collector it got expensive and I know a few others who felt the same way...

the 90s cartoons (xmen, spiderman, ironman, etc) just added to my comic lore.. its not the only lore I know (insert Bryan Singer here)

That's what got me out to. One comic having 5 different covers and you had to get them all. They got greedy, plus I got older and was getting into other stuff.

I was into comics deep in the 80s/very early 90s. But even then I would say I was in the minority. Out of like 10 people around my way I hung out with like 3 of us collected comics.

lucky you .. you had 3 out of 10 .. I was like the only one I knew... then I met a kid in college .. and honestly in my 43 years of life he's the only collector I know .. ( I know 2 shop owners but I don't count that , that another level)
i found out during open school night my daughter's teacher likes comics but then when i started talking he was like wow.. cause I'm talking stuff pre new 52..LOL

I watched the TV shows and shyt...

I hate DC/Marvel comic books to be honest...

Outside of the classic issues, and key mini series and one shots, shyt is trash...

I don't know how motherfukkers keep up with reboots and shyt...

All that silly destroying entire worlds and universe swapping and colliding...shyt is just dumb to me

Same reason I never really fukked with long ass animes with 100 plus episodes...

I like shyt that actually has a clear ending and a plot...

OK, yeah also even more lucky I had 2 older cousins really into it guiding me on what was good or bad. And I had a comic book shop around my way in high school that had Street Fighter 2/Mortal Kombat in it and I spent a lot of time there.
