I think the direction rap has taken in the past couple of years has more to do with the people behind the scenes than fans. This is the era where publications like the Source and XXL hold no weight. It's now about Vice, noisey, complex, etc... and just from what I've observed here being in NYC the people behind the scenes AREN'T hip-hop heads. They're hipsters and rap tourists. But now they're the tastemakers and the people putting these cats on cause they can promote them on their blogs. Most of these cats are white transplants, asians, and gays. A good portion of them are women too. They promote rappers they can relate to...probably the reason why you never see them champion or promote any street rappers. Look at the whole Drake vs Meek situation...who do you think those types were on the side of? Definitely not Meek. Drake is one of their poster boys.
as well, going back to what you was saying about fashionistas and stuff infiltrating the rap industry...I agree. The rappers nowadays that get the most props seem to be more savvy with the hypebeast/KTT/tumblr/instagram crowd than anybody else. That's who's dictating the direction of rap right now...I hate to say it.
This was an overlooked post. Alot of the people who decide what's hot now are nerds from Iowa who moved to NYC. And the artists they push are their friends, or their friend's friends, or their roomate. some of these feminist bloggers be giving up the p*ssy to rappers their magazine/site covers. Other times, it's just that these nerdy dudes just really like shytty, horrible, comedy joke rap. They like the irony of coming from a rich suburb family but they know the newest crap like "cold like Minnesota"
In this Desiigner dudes case, I don't think it's a nerd push though. This is just NYC djs helping another horrible record live. These are the people who let Ron Browz put out all those shytty singles back in 09. The "selfie stick in the club" era lost. The 40 oz van, cardi.b, tastemakers with no actual talent era lost
