You do realize there can be more to a film than just action right? You can't disqualify a film because you don't want to or can't understand that.
I can dismiss whatever I want. This movie was straight up garbage :trash:

A movie number one job is to entertain and this was not entertaining

Hopefully Rogue 1 makes up for this

Saw it the other day...

This movie created some of the most realistic suspense I've ever experienced watching a film. The suspense the audience feels is mirrored by the characters. For example, when communications go dark between the world powers, the characters feel the suspense of not knowing what China is going to do (which could potentially have devastating consequences for the rest of the planet) which is exactly what the audience feels suspenseful about because we learn exactly the same information that they learn at the same time. The drama was not conjured out of trying to figure out the characters' ulterior motivations or trying to guess what crucial plot information was being hidden from us, it was derived from the breakdowns of communication between the characters which is part of the bigger point the movie made about diplomacy.

The problem wasn't what the world powers didn't know about the aliens, the problem was that our inclination as people when confronted with the unknown is to start zeroing in on future outcomes that we have no proof will come to pass. To put it another way, when a woman walks home at night and sees a lone man wearing a hoodie further down the road, she knows nothing about him because they have not communicated. That will not stop her from creating "plausible" scenarios in her head about the man's intentions; the closer she gets to the man, the more her adrenaline pressures her to proactively react to the scenario she believes is most likely to happen. When her hand is wrapped around that can of pepper spray concealed in her purse as she walks past the man with her head down, her body language is the only communication occurring between the two and what she's saying is that she's ready to ACT. The cold part is that our instinct as people is to place the burden of proof of benignity on the unknown quantity AND to avoid communication with the unknown in the first place. If that man opened his mouth to say "good evening ma'am," there's legitimately a 40/40 possibility that she'll either whip around and spray him in the face or pick up her pace/cross the street regardless of what his intentions appear to be. There's only a 20% chance that she'll reciprocate communication with him because her instincts are telling her to act off of the information she has despite that she has no information about him whatsoever other than that he's a man standing alone on the street at night.

When it comes to the unknown people are wired to be the first to take action, not the first to communicate. Amy Adams' character was a professional communicator but even she deferred to her instincts the first time she met the aliens. What is the point of language if you don't use it?

The film did a good job of exploring human nature, I enjoyed it. The ending kinda sucked though, it wasn't very satisfying.

:what:

That's the weirdest comparison ever.

Arrival/Creed both amazing movies to me, Compton was perfect until the group broke up - after that the movie becomes a mess.

Reminds me I need to cop that Creed bluray :jbhmm:

The comparison I'm making is that those two were entertaining and eventful whereas this was just straight up boring.

Yet nikkas stayed them apart.

I'm also mad at myself because I spent extra money on RPX seats for this too.

When I saw people bring up Interstellar :ohhh:

Turns out it was :russell:

Anyways I just hope Rogue One makes up for this

Saw this the other night. Still not sure how I feel about it :patrice:

I understand and appreciate how the film explores and reflects raw human emotion. But honestly I just wanted to see aliens. And the ending is very underwhelming. Yes they tied together the whole circular time thing. But give me something about what the aliens need help with. Trying to understand why the Aliens were here essentially drove the movie. Then you just leave me with no answers? :what:

Highlight of the movie was Kevin Durant sitting behind me in the theater:manny:

I finished the novella this movie is based on last night.

Did not enjoy it at all, a real chore to read. It lacked nearly all of the emotional depth of the movie
