I won't blame Dolan for them overachieving. That was a combination of Randle overachieving for his extension and some luck as far as our health compared to other teams. As a sidenote: our luck with health came back to bite us between injuries and quarantines this past season. You'd hope things level out this time, especially since the quarantine timing kept screwing the momentum of young players.

They spent this offseason trying to create packages for Dejounte Murray, Jaden Ivey, and Donovan Mitchell. Those guys aren't just starters. Even Brunson could be argued as the number-2 guy on a successful team. I don't think they need or care to add another starter level player. They have enough starter level players and future starter level prospects to leave a couple of those guys in DNP land. The only starter-level guy they added was Hartenstein who coincides with Taj and Noel being sent off.

Thibs is definitely the problem, but giving him an additional guy that needs minutes without addressing current logjams is a waste of resources. I'm not counting on him changing his ways. The FO ought to have learned that after the Reddish trade, bringing in another mid-tier guy would only exacerbate the same problem. Especially a guy who slots in where RJ and Randle are ear-marked.
Yeah but they didn’t get any of those guys. This FO can't hit a homerun but they are very active on the trade market for smaller deals.

I’m not saying they wouldn’t prefer a star either. However, from a cap perspective getting another, younger wing in there makes sense. The two moves aren't tied together. Grabbing a wing to sign long term before the cap goes up doesn't mean that can't chase after a star player later.

Who here thought Thibs was playing Randle/Obi together after they signed Hartenstein? They even have Sims on the roster in case of injuries. The plan is 48 minutes and 18 fouls of rim protection and neither Randle nor Obi are SFs.
Yea hartenstein actually meshes well with randle imo

He’s a good floor spacer

I don't think adding another wing makes sense because the second wing should already be on the roster. RJ is signed and they kept Grimes out of the Mitchell trade. Then they've also got Cam who cost a first-round pick. Same problem happens at the 4 with Obi in place of Grimes. If one of those guys flops hard then maybe the math changes, but even then I think Reddish gets an opportunity before the FO considers giving up assets for another good but not great player.
