Knicks basketball is back tonight! No Grimes (and I don't think Sims is available either) tonight, but that means Cam ought to get a shot to make an early impression. I have to DVR it because a new basketball league is starting up by me, but I'll be working a recap up for KFTV. What I'm looking for:
- Brunson's impact on the starting line-up of course. Not just with the ball in his hands either. I'm curious to see what his trigger is like on the catch and shoot, he'll need to be more aggressive for NY than DAL...game one for a PG might just be feeling out though.
- RJ and Randle's vibes...Is RJ carrying the same confidence and leadership from the end of last year? Is Randle prepared to take an off-ball role and (literally) run with it?
- Fournier's defense. He's got to feel Grimes pressing him for minutes and he's fresh off high-level competition. Fournier pointed out defense as his focus coming into this season. But he's always been a limited defender, so let's see what gives first.
- Mitch and Hart's combo rim-presence. How many teams pair shot-blockers like this? One top-ten rim protector (by FG% at the rim) comes off and another comes on. The rest of the rotation will be mostly mid to subpar defenders, so the Centers are gonna need to live up to reps.
- How's Rose looking? He's at rookie weight and missed most of last season. So we getting back our X-factor or is it time for him to fallback?
- IQ and Obi's leap years...third year is big for developing players. Our two big pieces are analytics darlings, but the same logjams exist as last year (maybe worse now for IQ). The question becomes "how do they earn more minutes to make raw production match the promising analytics?"
- Hart's spacing...Soon as we signed him I brought up Joakim Noah. Thibs mentioned Hart at the top of the key for spacing. I'm really excited for what Hart will do as a Noah type passer with a better jumper than Taj (not by as much as hyped though).
- Cam and Deuce, my third-string hopes...Cam's guaranteed time with Grimes out. But I'm curious at how Thibs will handle the third stringers. Deuce McBride is that prospect we don't talk about but who has a lot of hidden upside. His jumper kills in the G-league, his defense is above-average for NBA players, and his summer league play was only overshadowed because Grimes went crazy. But will he even get a chance? Sims is in a similar boat too, but he's day-to-day with a groin injury.
