They don’t have to trade him into a team’s cap space. Teams having money on the books help, because expirings aren’t that valuable either. Next year’s FA is maybe even weaker than this years.
Also your examples are all top #5 to maybe #7 picks. After that you’re looking at maybe Sochan being considered worth more than Randle. I feel like Chet, Duren, and Mark Williams wouldn’t fill the same spot on a team either since all 3 are centers. That 20 picks Randle could be traded for.
Multiple teams have multiple picks in a weak draft and a weak FA that is the precursor to a even weaker FA next year. If the Knicks are willing to take picks and expiring or just roleplayers for Randle a trade will happen. There isn’t a lot of ways for teams to shake up their rosters outside of the trade and Randle is still talented enough teams will take that chance.
The only real impediment to a trade happening is if the Knicks rather keep Randle because they have to do stupid shyt like that to appease Dolan. Also because honestly Randle is talented. There is a good chance he thrives on another team. It’s just clear NY has him toxic as fukk.
This breakdown is legit. It's also why I think Randle (and potentially some others) can be moved but that a superstar trade will wind up being too expensive. Teams are going to need the trade market to make moves and desperate gm's take big risks. They'll do that either to outbid us for a star or to take chances on a guy like Randle (and I think Rose might be another player that sparks real interest).
I just want a dream scenario where we turn Randle into Brogdon and Jalen Smith...it won't happen, but that's the dream for me. That and a sign and trade where Mitch goes home and Valanciunas comes to hold down the center spot while Sims polishes up (I think Mitch was the rumored trade demand). Disclaimer: I know neither is happening.
