Dean Smith, who coached North Carolina to two men's basketball national titles, died Saturday night at the age of 83.

North Carolina announced Smith's death Sunday morning.

"Coach Dean Smith passed away peacefully the evening of February 7 at his home in Chapel Hill, and surrounded by his wife and five children," Smith's family said in a statement. "We are grateful for all the thoughts and prayers, and appreciate the continued respect for our privacy as arrangements are made available to the public. Thank you."

Legendary coach and a phenomenal man. This put a damper on my day. :to:

Heard some great stories about him today in that he always required that seniors start their last home game whether or not they were in the starting lineup or not. A few times, he had six seniors and he would start all six of them, take a technical foul, and then KIM just to have the ability of those guys saying they started their last home game.

this is so sad.

i honestly believe dean is the best coach of all time in any sport. goes so much deeper than wins and losses

iconic 4 corners offense which helped usher in the shot clock? Dean

point to the passer after a bucket? Dean

integrating the acc with Charlie Scott? Dean

he single handedly forced integration on chapel hill. dared someone to tell him no or challenge him on his beliefs of equality and tolerance. and no one did.

fought against the death penalty, for a nuclear freeze and many other things that he felt passionately about

you can see his influence in basketball today and always will as long as the game is played. he built a family in the unc basketball program and i can't imagine another coach who is so universally revered and loved by his players.

basketball and society as a whole are worse off without him

rip Dean

he made that a tradition at unc. every other year, our last home game is against Duke. the walk on seniors will always start even though it's usually against a highly rated Duke team.

Dean cared just as much about MJ as he did the lowliest walk on. Pure and utter class

another awesome Dean moment:

bill guthridge was his assistant for 30 years. turned down head coaching positions and was dean's loyal number 2

Dean was in good health and his 98 unc team had as much talent as any team ever. Dean waited to retire until October, way too late for the school to make an outside hire. Thus ensuring bill would get the job.

Class act

The man also worked to integrate his teams as far back to when he was in high school in Kansas

Sad day in North Carolina :mjcry: RIP

his dad was a big integration guy too.

they threatened to fire him for putting a black kid on his roster. didn't back down. great family

Gut was a fiercely loyal soldier; so much so that, when Roy rejected coming home the first time, Gut didn't speak to him for years. Probably blamed him for the 8-20 fiasco that happened under Matt Doherty.
