A woman told an NOPD detective she met former Saints star safety Darren Sharper at a bar in September then he took her back to his apartment in the Central Business District where he raped her, according to a police report released Friday. The report offers the first details about the accusations against Sharper since New Orleans police last week confirmed he was the subject of a sexual assault investigation.
Sharper was arrested a week ago in Los Angeles in an unrelated rape investigation there.
The woman told police she went to a "couple" of bars, where she consumed a "large amount of alcohol" on Sunday, Sept. 23. She said she met Sharper at one of the bars and he took her back to his apartment at 701 Tchoupitoulas St. around 10 a.m., according to the report.
There, he had sex with her without her permission, she told police. "The victim stated she did not consent to any sexual encounter," the report says.
She called the police and gave her statement to Special Victims Unit Detective Derrick Williams on Sept. 24 at 6:30 a.m., the report says.
Sharper, an NFL Network commentator who played a significant role in the Saints' 2009 Super Bowl-winning season, has not been arrested or charged in New Orleans.
The report's release came a week after Sharper was booked into the Los Angeles County Jail in connection with two separate sexual assaults, one in October and another this month. He was freed on $200,000 bond later that day (Jan. 17) and is due back in court there on Feb. 14.
NOPD spokeswoman Remi Braden said rape detectives consulted with prosecutors "very soon" after the case was reported, as is typical with all sex-crimes investigations. "This case is no different from others," she said.
Christopher Bowman, a spokesman for Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro, confirmed Friday the case remains under investigation.
It's unclear if Sharper, 38, has hired a lawyer. His agent has talked to several local attorneys, but those contacted this week said they could not confirm if they had been retained. Sharper now lives in Miami.
The LAPD has not released any details on the two rape investigations there, other than that both were believed to have occurred in the West Los Angeles area. The department has not yet responded to a public-records request from NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune seeking incident reports.
Both the LAPD and the NOPD classified the alleged rapes as the type that occurs when the victim is unable to consent to sex, possibly due to being intoxicated, and the offender knew or should have known of the victim's incapacity. A simple rape conviction in Louisiana carries no more than 25 years in prison.
Authorities in both cities said their investigations are continuing. A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles district attorney's office said no charges had been filed as of Friday.
Immediately after Sharper's arrest in California, the NFL Network said he was suspended from his job, where he has been an in-studio analyst since 2012.
Sharper spent two seasons with the Saints, from 2009-10. He helped lead the team to a 13-3 regular-season record and a Super Bowl XLIV win against the Indianapolis Colts in his first season in New Orleans with nine interceptions. In 2010, Sharper's last season in the NFL, he played in only eight of 16 games and didn't have any interceptions.
During his 14 seasons with the NFL from 1997 to 2010, he played on the Green Bay Packers for eight seasons and the Minnesota Vikings for four.
Shaper was a two-time, first-team All Pro and was named to five Pro Bowls. He was part of the NFL All-Decade Team for the 2000s.
