After the accident Roc-A-Fella froze Kanye’s budget and NOBODY, not even Dame was fighting for him. Kanye had to literally force that shyt himself by pushing the Through The Wire song and using every connection he had to get the video played on BET/MTV. When the video was in heavy rotation THEN that the gears in motion for Ye to drop College Dropout.

I think people inflate Dame’s initial interest in keeping Kanye under the umbrella because his beats were hot with this spectacular foresight that he would end up the genre redefining superstar he became. The only person that really saw that shyt happening the way it did WAS Kanye West, and maybe his mother. Thats why people are still drawn to him to this day despite him being an embarrassment of a black man. Because his story of self belief and perseverance strikes so much of a cord. I actually think Dame gets too MUCH credit for Kanye’s success.
