You can pass down plenty of assets just by working a good career.

An investment banker, an ER surgeon, or a lawyer working at a big firm can set their kids up way better than some dude that owns a local pizza shop.
I wish folks would stop repeating this nonsense. Savings from retirement accounts and stock options can be passed down. These are real tangible assets you get from working a 9 to 5. Most companies contribute to retirement accounts too so it multiplies your savings.

A business can be a liability and not always guaranteed to be profitable so what good is handing that down. Its worth nothing. In fact, statistically most black businesses do not have any employees outside the of the owner. How do you pass down a business when you are basically an independent contractor and hustling to get by cause the business depends on you working to exist? You gonna pass down your lash business or incense stand at the flea market? This is the dumb thinking Dame got folks like you believing. Working a stable 9 to 5 to take care of your family is the better option long term for 99% of the population and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Yea if you’re a capitalist type of “breh” then your opinion is gonna be different. But if you’re a “breh” that can see how “brehs” get treated in this capitalist ass society then you’d preach to other brehs about having their own. That type of mindset creates the Black Walstreets of the world. “If they’re going to block me out imma do it myself” type of thing. And that is a mentality that needs to be preached to black people instead of settling for working for corporations who do not care for you and/or your people.

Working higher paying jobs works better in the short term but owning works better in the long term. And black people who are usually the FIRST to get mistreated on jobs, need to be pushing more owners into the world than employees. The more owners we have the less we have to go outside of our community for employment. The point Dame was making is something we have to take on. More ownership

According to what studies?

Most small businesses fail. Most people don't have the capital nor the intestinal fortitude to go out on their own and shouldn't be forced down that career path unless they are absolutely sure they can survive doing it. Not everyone, in fact, most people, are not entrepreneurs and rightly value stability in most cases.

He’s such a fukking clown. Still thinks he’s a big shot power player rather than a washed up bum:mjlol:

Dame is the definition of being at the fork in the road of life and literally doing the wrong shyt.

Industry tolerated him because he was the path to Jay Z. The golden goose decides to fly away for good and Dame should’ve humbled himself and got a lil VP or president gig at any one of the 50 record labels Universal has. Who knows how many artists he could’ve had under his belt just by virtue of the work.

Eventually that could’ve led to something else down the line.

But he wanted to stay relevant and prove that he could survive on his own. But guess what? Dude was just a cog in that little machine from hit little label back in the day. That’s it. They had some success here and there but he had to double down on trying to be a$$hole of the decade.

Fool didn’t get that the people who really run this game had to power to lock him out for good and they did.

What are you talking about, Jay-Z aleady had that image that's why Memphis Bleek looked up to him, he said this on Drink Champs, Memphis Bleek use to sell drugs for Jay-Z, what are you talking about, Jay-Z didn't even know Biggs like that
Dame Dash is not a street nikka he grew up in prep school, which is why he stay around white people till this day

I’m not alluding to riding shotgun with some drug dealer in Brooklyn - I’m talking about the image he came into mainstream rap with. If Biggz and Dame weren’t spending all that money - Jay’s claim about spending money from 88 and losing 99 bricks won’t be believable.

It’s not about being a street nikka - It’s about rich drug dealer image they gave Jay that made everything he was talking about (the fables) believable. You think people would have taken Jay seriously if he were bummy whilst talking about all that mafioso shyt when he came out?

Anyway, a lot of you won’t be able to relate to Dame because you’re not hustlers. I’ve got a very flexible and lucrative 9-5 job that’s like my safety net but I’m a natural born hustler that’s always hustling and flipping things (I’ve been doing that since I was like 15) - with plans to retire from working by age 40. So, I can always relate to what Dame says no matter how he comes across.

His business ideas got Jay Z to where he’s today and Jay has been coasting on Jewish nuts since Dame left him as a token black man.

So, I won’t call Dame’s ideas bad - he just can’t manifest them due to burnt bridges and being blackballed. Great/intelligent guy but dumb antics.

Dame Dash = Marketer
Jay Z = Businessman

Let’s remember Jay was the drug dealer so he’s always been about his money. He just didn’t understand the corporate world and Biggs had the most money. Dame was literally just good at promotion and knew people in the rap industry. If Dame was half as smart as he thought he was, he would’ve been bounced back by now. The easiest thing for rich nikkas to do is invest in real estate and he can’t even do that. Or what Nas did by investing in tons of startups and companies. Dame was just all mouth. The moment he didn’t have a “product” to peddle anymore, he fell off hard.

With Dame I will always feel like him and Jay would agree on shyt but Jay would be quiet because he’s an artist then Dame would be Dame meanwhile Jay wasn’t all that quiet and when the floor came up from under Dame all he could do was be Dame

I would be mad too shyt very angry also Jay-Z made a whole movie about the shyt called Death of a Dynasty. Dame was in the movie

DAME DASH MORE LIKE DAME DUMBASS

I feel bad for him nothing was the same after he lost Aaliyah

Jay was like the teen who is just waiting to turn 18 so they can go to college and leave the overbearing/annoying parent.

Him, Dame and Biggs were thirst to let some cash flow come in an they sold half the label. That was the first shoe to drop but at least it came with money. The silent infighting and dumb decision making on Dame’s part didn’t help.

Meanwhile Jay realizes his time to dip can’t come soon enough and his people in the shadows have plans of their own for him that don’t require Dame barking in meetings.

They sell the rest of the label, cash out and everyone was free to do whatever while Def Jam could pretend the imprint was still a label. From there all three partners took their paths + had varying levels of resentment toward each other

Turns out people only cared about one of the three and Dame wasn’t some mastermind after all and got sent to industry purgatory for good.

I'd bet money I'm in a better financial position right now than Dame. Straight up.

It's not about being hurt, it's about delusions that are breaking young people's brains. If you go house-to-house in a super successful neighborhood you're going to find doctors, engineers, attorneys, investment bankers, etc. Most of whom are employees. Being an employee is not a bad thing. Owning a business is great! But most business owners aren't doing better than the average doctor. It's hard, joyless work and the fail rate is significantly high. Especially coming out a pandemic where many of them straight up lost everything.

We need more black business owners. We also need more black engineers, accountants, doctors, lawyers, etc. Most aren't going to be business owners and that's cool. Denigrating someone for working for someone else, while being BROKE, is laughable to me. This dude been hustling the same half assed bullshyt ideas for years with nothing to show for it man. If anyone is hurt it's his pockets and credit score.

A lot of good posts in this thread, BUT..

Being self-employed for the sake of being self-employed is stupid. Having stable income as security is always better than having inconsistent income or none at all. Most startups unfortunately fail in their first year of operation.

Better advice would be to become employed first, gain a set of transferable skills, then start building your business on the side while you are still employed. When you are secure enough to leave your job, then you can focus on your business full time. Also being a business owner doesn't mean you have to own the entire business yourself. You can always partner up with someone or own a piece of several businesses.

For every story of a successful entrepreneur, there are 10 more from those that are struggling to make ends meet.
