I mean to be far joe did have Cuban blackballed after he left TS.And didn't push his album at Atlantic.

Joe didn't blackball him.

Cuban asked for a huge advance, against Joe's advice. Joe wasn't an executive up there. His album was being overseen by Craig Kallman's people. He ran the bill up so crazy trying to pay producers hundreds of thousands of dollars, that he blew his promotional and marketing budget. Trying to get Neptunes beats and shyt. Got himself into wild debt there, and then wanted Joe to bail him out. It took him 5 years in court to settle his debt, and then he went over to Universal and did the same shyt with Swizz. That dude killed his own career.

That's when he signed with Atlantic, in '99. The album was set to drop in 2000. He signed his deal around the same time that Atlantic signed Terror Squad as a group. Dudes like Greg Angelides and Craig Kallman were trying to bring more Hip Hop to Atlantic. So they were throwing crazy money at dudes. Joe told Cuban to take a lower advance, but Cuban took millions and blew it all. He threw mad money at producers and could barely finish the album because the bread was damn near in the red after awhile.

Didn't Pun's death factor into the business problems?

My man bought Pun's second album, and in the insert I think they were promoting Cuban Link's upcoming project. I assume they were under the same record company, and Pun's success and cosign, & Joe's politicking landed Cuban the shot.

With Pun gone, label was probably less sure for Cuban to be able to pop as an artist. Joe is infamous for taking the lion's share of the deals he shopped for other artists. Remy and Tony Sunshine said this before.
Joe was a music industry vet at this point, so not a stretch to imagine that he jerked or confessed Cuban.
I always assumed that Joe predicted the label would withdraw or shelf Cuban, so he ate before the faucet was turned off.

I remember Fat Joe saying something like with all the marketing they were successfully doing, it was still projected to sell under 200K lifetime. No way that was gonna happen if the leaked 24K was the album to be tidied up and released. That leak was better than some of Joe's shyt.

Though overall, I see Cuban's take on things as more honest since, well, Joe is selfish at the expense of other artists historically speaking. Cuban got shelved at the last turn when Pun passed, Remy got zero promo on her debut, Armageddon is probably still "supposed to" come out, Sunshine was left rotting despite trying to get that fusion album going.

In contrast, when Pun was signed, he ensured pretty much everyone was to get paid and have a release.

Definitely. Pun was supposedly managing his relationship up at the label. He passed at the beginning of 2000, and that's when all of Cuban's shyt started to fall apart.

He started making his own business decisions, but mostly bad financial ones. Atlantic didn't really see the star power for him with Pun gone, and on top of that, he owed them mad money. So they basically just gave up on him. But Joe wasn't getting paid off of Cuban's deal. Pun was involved with that. Joe brokered the deal for the group album the year before.

Joe was on the label too, and tried to advise Cuban on how to handle the money situation, but Cuban got greedy and wanted more upfront. And that's how he got himself into trouble up there. He asked for way too much in advance, and didn't have a way to recoup any of it. Then got mad at Joe for not fixing the problem for him.

I remember when cuban signed and joe got the joint venture it was a big deal i also remember me waiting for Cuban and pun to drop and loving still telling lies.Cuban joint 24 cuts on it and was like damn that's a lot even back when the industry was really was making money hand over fist.I think he was following puns lead on Capital Punishment.
