Could a top NYC rapper bring that old NYC/East Coast sound back like Kendrick did or are niccas too gone riverdancing to UK/90's sample drill beats?

Nyc is too saturated a market, too filled with crabs in a barrel, and no longer in control of whats hot so its hurting. Too much competition in a small area that makes noone really fukk with anyone else. Guys come and go and dont have staying power because the whole city says “they fell off” on to the next song. You see it with everyone that comes from out there. Big or small. Its like a death spiral its been happening for 30 years tbh. All those one hit wonder nyc rappers of 2010s up totoday, on/off buzz.

All the underground artists that “blow” from nyc, blow in an organic, outside nyc way with internet audiences. Gfrom kool keith to griselda. Not within the city. That hasnt happened in SO LONG… guys like roc marci , el p, doom , keith had to leave the city ti really make a name. Ka and sean price stayed, werent as successful musically, have a name but not the international presence and just arent as popular as they should have been. The scene really doesnt support its own anymore but never did..

This goes Way back when ebro made the joke sean price is too minor league for hot97. They dont support their own and thats that, now they cant put people on at all. No club anthems, no clubs. Radio means nothing. Its different now. Idk how to say it really. Im from nyc and i support nyc artists but thats the truth. All the other cities seem new compared, and this will go on as rap fades looking for that new shiny thing… that aint from nyc. Add on it is transplant heaven, it dont mean what it used to.

The problem with the classic east coast style is that it's very specific to a time period. The early to mid 90's.

Other regions music can span eras and be updated easily because there was always more musicality to their sound. NY is all about that gritty, dirty sound and the kids out there BEEN moved off that.

Kendrick & Mustard have built a pedigree for 15 years so they’re afforded latitude to do different stuff. Mustard is the contemporary version for the west as the guys that came before. He’s making traditional west coast vibes with new aged feel. Before you worry about a east coast rapper doing that you need the east coast producer repackaging the old into the new

The difference between boom bap and that bay shyt is BPS. When was the last time a boom bap song tore up clubs? Radio? Made women shake their ass? Inherently people move to that west coast shyt whereas east coast shyt is more…not that

So whether or not Kendrick is using a regional sound isn’t as important as it passing the accessibility test which boom bap doesn’t

Mustard was flopping for a while before Kendrick saved him. He hadn't had a hit in a minute

if a new young NYC rapper came along that revitalized expectations for spitting bars at an exceptional gifted level, and brought a modern jersey club/drill inflected re-vamp of rugged boombap/gritty beats with hard ass drums but fast, then yeah they absolutely could.

None of the newer NYC rappers are good enough, none are aspiring for greatness.

No because NY doesn't show love to their new artists as much as the West Coast OGs do.

They been having Jadakiss and Fabolous hog the scene for over 20 years.

Young MA came close but she had a super short run
This makes no sense because A Boogie With The Hoodie is 100x more popular than Jadakiss or Fabolous ever was and he sounds nothing like them

A Boogie has 3 #1 albums, a diamond record and like 30-40+ songs over gold/platinum

And solo headlines his own world wide tours

He also doesnt do drill music
