The artificially high cost is the biggest issue here. No matter what payment system we have this will be an issue. Our obesity, general health problems, and general disdain for one another will keep single-payer systems out of America for a long time. A single payer system for insurance and a more competitive market for services is the only way to move beyond the health cost crisis.

With that said anyone walking around in 2013 without insurance is skating on thin ice. Medical services are a subset of services, and in this world services cost money. However there is a market failure here because as a single patient this guy is forced to compete with insurers as a payer so hes charged like insurance would be charged. This is a corrupt relationship between the insurance and health care industries.

This guy took a gamble and lost. The monetary system discriminates. If you gamble with your own health by being unable to afford insurance, you go into debt for life. If you gamble with people's mortgages you get your money back. this guy needs to hit kickstarter.

Yall would have fainted if I showed yall my appendicitis bill from earlier this year. My appendix actually ruptured and when all was said and done, the bill turned out to be around 110K. Insurance sure saved my ass on that because I sure as in hell wasn't even going to try and pay that if thats what I had to pay in full.
How much did you have to pay?

they charged this man 7.5k for sitting for 2 hours in a recovery room :heh:

this is for a 20 year old with appendicitis.

be against socialized medicine, brehs.

this is ridiculous the insurance model existing to begin with drove these costs to unnatural levels. Socialized medicine will drive up costs unnaturally as well its just that it will affect everyone on a macro level with higher taxes increased debt on the country and potentially poorer medical services and treatments

i don't think there is a quick fix and its probably easier to just go full socialized than be able to reverse it back to efficient market levels with increased competition in the insurance realm. I would accept this if it came packaged with a more efficient flat tax and an elimination of the corporate tax. We are going to need a massive jump in GDP to handle the extra debt and you increase GDP by putting more money in everyone's pockets.

I'm curious why they feel they have the right to charge such outrageous prices.

Because as the head nurse of a huge hospital here in NYC told me JUST LAST WEEK the federal government (Medicare) pays about 60% of the bills they distribute.

So why NOT overcharge?

these costs weren't "driven", they're completely artificial. it's called greedy fukking humans. How the fukk will socialized medicine drive up costs anymore than they are when every other country in the world has lower healthcare costs than us, by literally 200% (the second highest)

thats the thing the government has its hand in almost 70% of healthcare anyway which is why I said it would just be easier to cut the charade and just make it all government subsidized than to be able to roll it back enough to make it reflect true market costs and compensation

you've already got doctors and nurses who put themselves in debt for triple digits needing to recoup that being a factor as well.

Well, he shouldn't have been lazy/stupid/poor and should have had better insurance, if not he deserves whatever he has to pay - that's what freedom is all about. The efficiency of the free market. :blessed:

Anyone who thinks the healthcare market is an example of a free market, simply has no clue what they are talking about. :yeshrug:

What would make it a free market system?

Maybe if we also got rid of Medicaid and Medicare?
