I would have thought it was the other way around due to the terrain of Afghanistan (what I've been researching about it). The mountains and hard to maneuver terrain.

They are difficult to maneuver in but not impossible with experience. It’s not as densely populated so indirect fire support is rarely off the table. CAS and somebody’s QRF is usually a call away.

Valleys are just as common where I was at.

In Iraq, specifically those patrolling urban areas, may have the disadvantage of not being able to rely on all that support because the civilian population. It’s more difficult to maintain line of sight in urban combat and you may never know what’s around the corner, inside of a window, or waiting in a door way. IED’s are plentiful in both places but there’s was so much debris, trash, and objects in the cities that they’re easier to hide. A poster, a soda can, a pile of trash, a parked car, all may kill you. In Afghanistan it’s a little easier to recognize things that are out of place.

The munitions and technology used against are different too. The explosives used in Iraqi IED’s/EFP’s are usually repurposed military munitions. They could completely kill older iterations of our armored tracked vehicles and pack more of a punch. The IED’s in Afghanistan rely more on homemade explosives like what Timothy mcveigh used. Still deadly but not as. We only encountered a few instances of EFP’s and some warheads modified to punch through MRAP armor (Recoiless rifle rounds and Rpg warheads). Their most dangerous tools were vehicles packed full of explosives and well planned/places ambushes. They were also very skilled at squad level maneuver warfare. Both places can fukk up a unit badly in the right conditions though. A place like Iraq can drive you crazy. Afghanistan just made me nervous about night time.

Afghanistan has a young population - many of whom don't remember when the Taliban were last in charge prior to 2001. Also a lot of young people - including young women - have jobs that might come into conflict with the Taliban's strict interpretation of Sharia. How will life change for them now that the Taliban are back?
They’re wearing veils and have no future

Vice has a good doc on this that goes into it further. If you have time I recommend people watch it.

These dudes are really uneducated, ignorant , smoke H and weed constantly, and some of them are either raping little boys or scamming money. Not to mention there was constant attacks by insiders against afgan forces and sometimes us soldiers which killed trust.

The taliban had all the real warriors and most of these guys are rural Shephard and merchants. There was no chance it would succeed

Just got done watching the doc . Found out Maj Steuben was separated from the Marines after the documentary for "saying too much". Afghanistan Army was bound to fail.

They didn't. Taliban just ran away to the mountains and other countries. And then came back when the US left.
It ain't even that

The Taliban literally was getting paid by the US the whole time:unimpressed:

The US would pay rent for the land in Afghanistan that the FOB, SOB, CP, ETC.
Were on, to some millionaire Afghans that owned the land and lived in America

People think because it was a wat that America just went over there and took land to put bases on...

That's not how it goes

And them rich mafukkas literally had ties to the taliban:unimpressed:

We KNEW this:unimpressed:

We would give $25k (US $) a pop to villagers for taliban intel

And the villagers were Taliban members giving up info the taliban literally told them they could give up to get the $
:unimpressed:

The whole war was such a fukking joke :martin:

If u was a service member and u actually thought u was there for a honest moral reason u a fukking idiot

For me i didnt give 1 shyt about them racist ass arabs:manny:
And just was there for the adventure :unimpressed:

The ONLY way to solve the issue there is to wipe out the entire Taliban and supporters and install a whole new regime that somehow was actually democratic

And they would have to be self reliant cause if the US has any involvement after the new regime then they would be corrupt like before:unimpressed:

The Truth
the taliban was just as bad. the difference is the taliban is less corrupt and they cut deals with the afghan army
You talking about now?

it was pointless and inevitable to stay there and leave. These dudes had 7 years of training by the time the vid in the op was shot, and they looked worse than nikkas in bootcamp.

Nobody was ran or defeated, we left some place we shouldn’t have been in the first place and them dudes folded…

It was Major Bill Steuber and the director is looking to do a follow-up. He stated the guy had his career ruined.

The problem is that the media makes the Taliban look like a bunch of uncivilized cave dwellers when in reality, they're a well trained militia. The other problem is Aghanistan is mostly made up of illiterate weed heads, there was no way the US could have trained those guys properly. Imagine an army made up of Gomer Pyle azz MFs.

They need to do a follow up. The Major look like he had good intentions about fixing the situation that the ANAs, the locals, and his units were dealing but he spoke too much during the interview like if he was unaware its going to be posted on the net.
