Well. I guess that's my point. I never really subscribed to the whole "soul\slave" food narrative to begin with. What guys are attempting to describe in here has everything to do with an income issue. Fried chicken isn't soul food... neither is Mac and Cheese or fried catfish, etc... Its just shyt people like to eat cause it tastes good....

I do think that there is a certain group of food or foods that make up soul food, but I see that people just think it's collard greens, mac&cheese, and mashed potatoes. I also think soul food may vary by region and the black population available. I could be wrong that's why I asked. You make a valid point too. I did think that soul food may be this (pictures below), but I am not African American so I didn't want to say the wrong thing as definite.

:laff: I don't know if I should be offended that people are calling Mac and Cheese soul food.

My grandma made real soul food, grows vegetables and everything herself and she's in her 90s and in better health than me. :mjcry: It all depends on how you cook it. And when you take into account the fact that those commenting are not even of black American slave descent, you can't expect them to know that shyt.

For sure... My Grandma grew collards and tomatoes.. and sometimes basil and rosemary..... My Grandad grew peppers and okra every year..... I feel you on that Garden tip....... I think most cats in here get their ideas about "soul" food from T.V. and the internet.....

My grandma is 70 something and super oldschool. If she makes any vegetables, you can be sure some fatty, salted meat
was the "seasoning" for it. Sometimes it was good (the aforementioned cornbread) and other times it was excessive, like this time
she used salt pork for macaroni and cheese.
:russ: Salt pork in mac and cheese? Im from the deep South and i ain't never heard of such. I don't blame you for feeling so strongly, you were traumatized.

Deep fried meats, vegetables cooked in pig and animal fat, cobblers, gravy. You know what Im talking about
besides chitterlings which are :scust: and maybe oxtails which are boiled there isn't anything else cooked in fat.

I can't even think of raising a family and not letting my kids have the traditional sunday soul food dinner :banderas:

Soul food is not my favorite food. I'm not crazy about it. The only thing I really like are the veggies and they have to be cooked in vegatable stock or with turkey meat. I like Jamaican and Spanish food better. I'll feed it to them on holidays only. I can't even really cook soul food.

Cause he don't even know what soul food is. When it comes to the nuances of black American culture, a lot of non-black American black folk don't be up on it.

Seriously. My mother became a freak about growing her own food cause of my grandma, didn't let me touch anything processed as a kid and it's cause she was around my dad's family who was literally growing their own shyt. Some of them were even farmers too. Soul food to me is real food from what I saw growing up. And my dad (RIP) was a great cook too. When I would go south during the summers, I vividly remember him spending a whole Sunday making food from scratch.

Agreed. When I think of soul food, I think of having to pick and snap fresh green beans, shucking white corn and cutting it off the cobs ourselves, cutting up fresh green onions from the backyard to put on our vegetables. I can't wait to get back home get some of that fresh squash from the backyard (no one makes it better than my stepdad).

To be honest, the first things that comes to mind in regard to soul food is fresh vegetables, but that's just the way I grew up.*

*and like you just mentioned...everything made from scratch.
