I do think that there is a certain group of food or foods that make up soul food, but I see that people just think it's collard greens, mac&cheese, and mashed potatoes. I also think soul food may vary by region and the black population available. I could be wrong that's why I asked. You make a valid point too. I did think that soul food may be this (pictures below), but I am not African American so I didn't want to say the wrong thing as definite.

I think people would call the very first pic soul food because for some reason those particular items in the pic have become synonymous with black cuisine somehow..... but quite frankly, a lot of whites in the south eat the same way..... :yeshrug:

That Jambalaya is that creole shyt...... shyt go hard too if the right person prepares it

Agreed. When I think of soul food, I think of having to having to pick and snapping fresh green beans, shucking white corn and cutting it off the cobs ourselves, cutting up fresh green onions from the backyard to put on our vegetables. I can't wait to get back home get some of that fresh squash from the backyard (no one makes it better than my stepdad).

To be honest, the first things that comes to mind in regard to soul food is fresh vegetables, but that's just the way I grew up.*

*and like you just mentioned...everything made from scratch.
Oh my goodness... You just described my childhood!!!

Of course I feed/fed my kids and husband soul food.
I think I might fry something like once a month actually
greens with smoked turkey are amazing. Do you know how nutrient packed greens are?
Somebody may think they're doing something with an iceberg salad that's practically zero sum nutritionally
no cisco in here. No lard
lots of fresh veggies, lean meats and fiber

Y'all will pry my sweet cornbread mac and cheese and slow smoked ribs out of my cold dead hands
fukk that :comeon:

Seriously. My mother became a freak about growing her own food cause of my grandma, didn't let me touch anything processed as a kid and it's cause she was around my dad's family who was literally growing their own shyt. Some of them were even farmers too. Soul food to me is real food from what I saw growing up. And my dad (RIP) was a great cook too. When I would go south during the summers, I vividly remember him spending a whole Sunday making food from scratch.

Post brought a tear to my eye.... My Granparents were the same way until they got to old or had passed when I was around 16........ And by my Grandmother being Christian, her and my uncle would prepare food all day Saturday...... I can easily say that most of the chicken I ate until I was about 13 was killed that day or the day before......biscuits and rolls were from scratch too.... We had a chicken man and a hog man in our community..... apple, peach, plum and pecan trees were everywhere...... Man I miss that shyt.....

Yes, it's better than all these Ramon noodles, pop tarts, frozen crap that's full of preservatives
And these clowns in here will have no problem with feeding their youngins that processed trash. Please don't feed them beans and vegetables with a side of meat(this is basically the 'Soul Food' I was raised on)! That's Soul Food and it will kill them!:russ:

These kats man.

On an evolutionary scale, we haven't had even a modicum of time to adjust our diets to this processed stuff...why do you think we stay so sick? Now...natural meats..vegetables..fruits....on an evolutionary scale we have been exposed to this for quite some time...but like folks said, even on that note, moderation is king.

And if you don't believe in evolution, do this. Eat 2 Pop Tarts, wait 2 hours and then eat 2 peaches and tell me which one left you feeling the best. Hell, 2 apples..1 cup of raisins...a fruit salad...a regular salad...I'll put any of this up against your processed food and tell me how you feel...and I mean a noticeable difference right away.:feedme:
