This is so hurtful and disrespectful and sad. This is nothing to derive pleasure or entertainment out of.

For context, the play takes place in modern times and is actually about IR couples role playing in a therapy session created by two white lesbians.

So it isn’t technically rape, but it’s somehow even more fukked up. Dude who wrote this grew up around mostly white people and seriously needs to talk to a black psychiatrist or something

Jeremy O. Harris' Slave Play, seen this past winter in a sold-out, critically acclaimed run at New York Theatre Workshop, will transfer to Broadway's Golden Theatre. Robert O'Hara, who helmed the world premiere, will return to direct, with performances set to begin September 10, with an October 6 opening night. The show is scheduled for a limited 17-week run, and will mark the Broadway debut for both playwright and director.

Casting will be announced at a later date.

In Slave Play, the old South lives on at the MacGregor Plantation—in the breeze, in the cotton fields...and in the crack of the whip. Fear and desire entwine as three couples navigate the complicated meaning of race, history, gender, and sexuality in 21st-century America.

The production features sets by Clint Ramos, costumes by Dede Ayite, lighting design by Jiyoun Chang, sound design by Lindsay Jones, properties by Noah Mease, and movement by Byron Easley. Claire Warden serves as the intimacy and fight director.

Slave Play was developed and produced at the 2018 Eugene O’Neill Theater Center's National Playwrights Conference. The play is the recipient of the Rosa Parks Playwriting Award, the Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award, and The Lotos Foundation Prize in the Arts and Sciences.

The Broadway production will be produced by Greg Nobile and Jana Shea of Seaview Productions, Troy Carter, Level Forward, and Jake Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker of Nine Stories.

Harris' plays also include "Daddy", which premiered Off-Broadway earlier this year. He is attached to pen the movie Zola, inspired by the 2015 Twitter saga of Aziah Wells; the cast includes Tony winner Ari'el Stachel and Colman Domingo.
