1) Sami was great in his role, but it really was the storyline. We saw some of his promos as the top face going against the top heel in the lead-up to Elimination Chamber. He has an average look, average on the mic in terms of delivering a main event promo. He peaked at Elimination Chamber and that was his role. He will now go on to tag with KO and be in the mix of the Bloodline meltdown. That was his role and he's been the greatest player in it alongside Jey, but he ain't THE GUY.
2) Think of a better setup or person to dethrone Roman's streak. Don't matter if he reach 1000 days, at Wrestlemania or not, whatever. There is no one. Dude came from the rival company he started, back to get the strap for his Dad. To me, that ALMOST rivals the importance of Roman's streak, without having anything to do with the Bloodline story. He's great on the mic, great in ring, really great in media appearances, knows the ins and outs of everything that comes from being the guy, from old school to new school, in-ring to backstage.
3) The things that killed the momentum for him is he got injured, and didn't have to "fight his way" to the Roman match, because he couldn't. He also couldn't get as integrated into the Bloodline story because of that, which also gives him a degree of separation from the audience. For me Cody is the best suited to finally defeat Roman. They are trying to fastrack him on the original timeline of win the Rumble, and go on to WM. But the injury, along with they haven't done a great job of writing this fast track, make a WM win a little bit lackluster. But when given how the Bloodline is coming to a close, it lines up with Roman getting stranded by his family at the biggest show of them all, and finally losing.
Cody winning makes sense, keeps the Bloodline meltdown on track, can set up Roman to do some non-title stuff with Solo, run it back with Cody at Summerslam maybe, do some more shyt with Sami/KO and even the Uso brehs, and maybe take some months off and come back as a respected face now that he proved himself to fans with great heel work. All of that is possible for Roman and he does NOT need to be the champ for that.
