You're really comparing "I heard a noise, it was dark and I couldn't see anything" to "I saw him clearly in daylight, told him to put his hands up, and then he reached into his waist and pulled out something that looked like a gun"?
And in this case, the 'something' that he pulled out wasn't his wallet, or some drugs he was trying to get rid of, or some other shyt that doesn't resemble a gun.....but rather something that ACTUALLY looked like a real gun......
There's a HUGE difference between waiting to see if a strange noise in the dark is actually someone who's about to shoot you.....and waiting to see if somebody in front of you in broad daylight, who reached in his waist and pulled out something that looks like a gun, is actually someone who's about to shoot you
This story and the other story with the cop getting startled are completely different and are horrible comparisons, try again fam
im not basing it on the content or context of each situation but the knee jerk reaction that the officers had. which in both cases were to shoot.
i understand that a cop always has to be on their toes but they also have to be able to analyze and analyze quickly. if a cop were entering a house on a domestic disturbance call to find nobody apparently present and while they cleared a room they heard a muffled noise from behind the door and squeezed six shots through the door only to find the wife and kids tied up and duct taped, they fukked up.
likewise if a person hops into their car to grab their wallet or reaches in their pocket to grab their wallet they are trained to analyze situations more quickly and with more detail than the average joe therefore to make a silly judgement and say "i thought he was going for a gun" doesnt always fly (which is why that excuse is so ludicrous and stereotypical) ...for them to release the footage to a bunch of armchair cops and detective/investigators 9 times out of 10 they are going to say "I woulda shot too" and then you get into quarrels well he was black of course he shot, or he was an elderly white man who could do no harm to anyone and people are going to be biased.
we cant blame the fact or hide it that we do have a lot of untrained people behind badges and guns and when they get spooked- or fear for their lives (which comes easy for some, and not for others) they react. Ive worked in situations where the severity of danger varied but because i have a much more level head than others, i am able and was able to resolve crisis when others would have fled or sought outside assistance. Ive been praised for it and condemned for it because if something does or would have gone wrong its like "why didnt you get help, why didnt you get out of there?" That depends on the person who is doing the evaluation which is why a lot of people on here wouldnt have shot in both situations and some would have.
its the same for eye witnesses..they may say "the suspect was wearing blue jeans and a white shirt" the cops dont go tackling everyone in blue jeans and a white shirt, they analyze break down things and obtain as much detail efficiently before they approach which is generally casually unless a suspect arouses suspicion.
