Does anyone think it's possible for an artist to have classic albums but then have other albums that aren't necessarily "classic" but are better than the albums that are considered so?

I guess the reason I'm asking is because i see more reasons for a classic stamp on AEOM or 7DT than Me Against the World, although I personally think MATW is better than both (quality-wise; ignoring impact/influence, etc), which is why I voted it a classic as well.

Definitely.

All Eyez On Me could arguably be considered by a lot of people 2Pac's 3rd or 4th best album (I'm not one of those people) but it's influence and impact is far greater than his other albums and it's not even close.

Yeah absolutely.

For example, ATLiens is less classic than Southernplayalistic in the sense of influence/impact etc. but is definitely of higher quality. Both are classics anyway, so not quite what you were looking for lol. But to some, ATLiens might not be classic, in some weird world, you get me?

Or going to two different artists.

Stress: The Extinction Agenda might not be classic, but is arguably a better album than 3 Ft. High & Rising, which is undeniably classic.
Yeah absolutely. Like I can definitely see that when it comes to comparing separate artists, but like in an individual catalog I guess I was struggling to think of examples where an artist has a bonafide classic that might not also be consider his/her best work but the "better" album isn't necessarily considered classic. I guess it's just easier to say both are classic haha.

Would you say that automatically makes the albums that are better "classic" just off the strength of quality even with less influence/impact as opposed to just being great albums? I voted them all classic by the way...just wondering what other people thought.

i gave it to matw, aeom and 7dt:

matw - best work from pac, no need to elaborate here

aeom - personally it aint classic a to me, double cds are too challenging to pull off and this is no exception. for something clocking in at over two hours in total, the material has to be twice as good to keep it going. a classic to me has to bang from front to back and by the time i get to the end i wanna repeat the whole joint. cant say the same for this as i usually call it quits by the middle of the second cd. i only voted yes because of how the majority calls it a classic

7dt - this is a classic under the given circumstances. the length is perfect at just under an hour without too much skits. but too much outlaws appearances kinda held the quality down

for kanye, his influence and impact cant be denied, but his albums arent to the level of the stuff which i consider as 'classic' so i voted no

exactly how I feel about this album, but voted 'no'. It's not totally consensus like some other albums in hip-hop like Illmatic or 36 Chambers. I don't feel any Pac album is certified to that level, so you can kinda state your case for any and say yes or no. Pac has classic songs though, and is a legendary rapper, that ought not to be forgotten.

I voted yes on his other 2 contended classics.

All Eyez on Me doesn't have the quality. Making it a double album hurt it imo in terms of that, so it rules it out for me as a classic album, although it certainly has influence and impact and relevance.
I voted yes for MATW, AEOM and Makaveli.
No to everything else.
The first two Pac albums were easy no votes.
The two Kanye albums were a tough call. I think both of them have issues with quality and timelessness. Reading the thread though, I'm not sure if I'm injecting too much of my personal opinion into my decision on Kanye :jbhmm:
A lot of interesting discussion in this thread after the GOAT Pac Stan @Nomad1 came through and crushed the buildings. :wow:
Then that delusional weirdo @Wally Russell trolling. :mjlol:
@Illeye buckmatic remember when he made that thread about you that backfired? And the whole Coli ran a neg train on him. :lolbron:

you've just destroyed any chance of Kanye getting a classic on these forums
:skip:
Not sure if this is for real, but it wouldn't be a surprise. He wouldn't be Kanye if he didn't speak his mind. I mean he called himself "the best that's ever made music" earlier today during his twitter beef with Wiz. Either way, his numbers are about to take a major hit. :pachaha:

A classic is a classic, whether it's because a flawless piece of work or because it was a landmark in the culture from an impact standpoint.

Dude couldn't fukking read and took his irrational anger out on OP, which happened to be me lol.

I mean it's tough not to put your own personal opinion on things. But yeah idk, did you vote both no for Kanye?

or does it have to be both
:ohhh:
Kinda how I feel. Especially more recently, there have been artists/albums that come out and have a pretty significant impact on the direction of the game although their work isn't necessarily flawless. Guess it depends on what kind of impact it has on the game...doesn't necessarily have to be good I guess, but does that make it a classic nonetheless for better or worse?
