I think there were a lot of factors. The front office turmoil with flabgic leaving and Jeanie getting consultations from Linda Rambis and an old ass Phil and Kurt juxtaposed with the clippers having a more traditional looking front office including the architect behind 10 Laker titles and a few Warriors titles, and a billionaire owner.
Then the Kawhi gaffe where the Lakers waited and missed on quality role players only to be left with the last of the scrap heap while the Clippers were merely plugging in Kawhi and PG to a team that was already on the rise.
Combine those factors with LeBron missing significant time from injury for the first time in his career, AD’s already shaky injury past, Vogel’s unproven record as a championship coach, and a slew of older and/or questionable role players with not a lot of shooting and you can see why there were all these questions coming in.
I think the media also loves it when the Lakers are high profile but in turmoil so continuing the narrative of the “can’t get right” Lakers vs the rising, more orderly Clippers was a juicy storyline headed into the season.
Naturally, this just points out how absolutely trash NBA media and analysis can be. Seeing as how they stubbornly stuck with this position.
There is truth here. However, there were plenty of obvious questions about the Heatles and Cavs too and people didn't waste time screaming "superteam". We talking Bron and AD here. Seriously people made an issue out of Bron, who you know handles the ball all the time and runs the offense anyway, being named the pg. Beyond that, the Lakers beasted the whole season based on stuff that was pretty obvious before the season, Bron and AD, size, experience, versatility, and yet the questions remained. The Clips were up and down with some obvious glaring issues that ended up getting exposed, lack of size, mentality, lack of a true facilitator, and got treated like the mid 90s Bulls until they actually got exposed.

Ive said on some tinfoil shyt that ballmer was paying the media off lmao. But on some serious shyt, I think it was because of name recognition as well. Clippers had a lot of familiar names/faces. I think they also looked at the 6 game series with the Warriors and assumed that adding Kawhi and PG would make them favorites if they could push the Warriors to 6.
What was missed was that the type of team they were the year before couldn’t be replicated with this new team. And the media did no favors by gassing them up even more before they’d won anything. Truth be told, I’m not sure. I suppose the idea is was that the Lakers were a regular season phenomenon and the question marks at the beginning of the season would finally reveal themselves when the eventual Lakers/Clippers matchup took place. The Lakers role players are like a 70s Raiders rosters. Outcasts, misfits, no names, with a few former elite/semi-elite players. Whereas the Clippers were like a who’s who of role players and the superstars had comparable name recognition. In the case of Kawhi, he was just coming off an improbable title run with the Raptors.
Clippers were just an easier and safer pick to go with. Just name names and cliches and your done. Should be just as much a no brainer with the Lakers but I guess some of the unproven players were hard to bet on or justify betting on.
