Alternate title,

Female Accountability

Overall I was digging it. I don't think this was a bait and switch at all. I don't know what the people that thought "it didn't show anything" were looking for.

From jump, its A24, you know it was gonna be a typical Hollywood story. (but ...it kinda is...)

The visuals should be seen on a big screen, imo.

Spoilers
The Big Question - How did this happen?

The big question asked in the trailer, is under what political situation would Liberal California (which is a hilarious thought of it being liberal) and Conservative TX linking up to take on the Federal Government.

The answer is basically in the trailer with a bit of support in the film.

Offerman is a 3rd term president, in contradiction of the US constitution. (21st amendment)

His next 2 crimes
  • Abolishing the FBI
  • Air Strikes Against Civilians
The rest of the reason for the conflict is unexplained.

The Big Lie
Somehow the people reviewing this film, along with the director, don't want to say the obvious.

A president becomes a fascist - which inspires TX, CA, and (apparently FL) along with "militia forces" to attack military forces that remain loyal to the president.

Folks pretending this ain't a Donald Trump scenario. The fact that Offerman's character abolishes the FBI is a clear reference to him. Some of the early mannerisms are very much Trump inspired.

The next part of fantasy is that the military would side with the constitution and move against the fascist. In that respect, the movie is actually very hopeful. I don't see the military siding with the constitution.

I, for one, seeing how the legal system is afraid to tap people to enforce the actual laws on folks thats guilty as sin (CEOs and Politicians), feel that America will be more like A Man in the High Castle rather than Red Dawn.

What's probably really accurate is that most of the heartland doesn't give AF about what's going on in DC, NY, or CA...but they're gonna stay strapped.

The Movie is not about the USA conflict though

By the comments in here, Lotta y'all coming into this thinking it's gonna be Saving Private Ryan/Apocalypse Now/Star Wars/Inglorious Basterds when it's much more like Generation Kill and Nightcrawler.

The Story is about the Reporters

Various reporters and the main characters are trying to get an interview with Offerman. Think of it like trying to track down Qaddafi or Hussein for some pics and some soundbytes at the tail end of those conflicts. Crossing the east coast - NYC into the PA/WV and then VA - they come across all manner of fukkery.

Plot wise a bit of DMZ (the excellent comic book) and Nightcrawler. Character Wise - Ice cold melts and New Jack steps up.

But lemme get into the characters

Main Characters
  • Wagner Moura - Plays a Vet Reporter, but he's a thrill jockey. (which is common in this field. If you ever get a chance to read about the dude who took that pic of the vulture standing behind the starving child...). My man Escobar looking healthy for once. Stay getting throwed though.
  • Mary Jane would not get it. - She plays the lead and veteran war photographer. I get Kirsten and Claire Danes mixed up. But she's trying to school the young'n reporter
  • Young Reporter Chick - She bogarts her way into the situation by basically flirting with Escobar. She doesn't know what the hell she's doing, and keeps almost getting killed. (Though I like to think my man Pablo was using her as a human shield)
  • Old Head - My man Thufir from Dune plays the old head, who's seen it all. I wonder if he had some influence on the script, because he stays dropping "Black Man who's seen it all and survived" wisdom on these fools. He comes through in a major way though.
Other Characters I noticed
  • Asian dudes stay doing the most.
  • Matt Demon!! You know if he shows up in anything pure fukkery ensues. How does he know how to channel that insane psycho energy? Wish there was more of him. Jesse Plemons, although the reviewers aren't sure what side he's on, it's pretty clear to me he's a loyalist to the fascists. I feel like these reviewers that are talking about this movie are afraid of striking the ire of well connected conservatives.
Visuals and Audio
  • Love the cinematography.
  • Love the cuts between the film and the photos.
  • Love the photos.
  • 1080p is not gonna do this justice. You need to see this in the theater
  • Lotta call backs to things we've seen from war photogs. Mass Graves, Trophy shots over dead dictators, etc
  • Locations were bananas. One particular scene had me thinking about The Last of Us.
  • Sound design - way louder than Dune. I should have brought some ear plugs tbh.
  • Also a lot of these films will get the actual US military for footage. Have a feeling most of the stuff was CGI.
The Ending

I don't know if it was predictable, but it certainly wasn't that surprising.

Just got out of the theater, great watch is an understatement. Sound design, cinematography - shots of the action/whatever the journalists shot in between the film. Some parts really keep you on the edge of your seat. Locations and set designs were captivating. Ending was
lowkey savage:picard:ol girl took multiple flicks of her going down in front of her after trying to save her. Though I will say you lowkey see it coming when they were in the clothing shop and they have the convo when Dunst's character tries on the dress and they talking about getting the "sweet spot" for the right shot.

Overall, glad I caught this in theaters.

First off :mjcry:

Second, like @I AM WARHOL and @BonafideDefacto said it's very high intensity, so this might not be the movie to take kids or first dates to. What makes it especially intense is the very familiar backdrop and setting of our home country (for us Americans). They did a good job making everyone look regular.

Now for the spoiler part.....

They just had to make the breh soldier look like a coward :mjpls: And I kinda already knew the OG was gonna die. A lot of dead Black men are depicted in this film :francis: Thankfully, a brehette comes in at the end bossing shyt up :blessed: Also feels like they're slick giving Asian folk a wake up call :sas2: Also I feel like this is a message from Hollywood/The Media that they are the ones that control the fate of the country. And they made it clear which side they're backing.

The storytelling through cinematography , careful audio placements. This movie is certified. May go rewatch this. It's an A+
:wow:
very pleased that they ended with the harsh reality of enduring war. That many people end up a casualty and the main character isnt above that

So many dead black people for a cast without much melanin
