that's what I'm trying to ascertain but no one can give me an answer. why is direct sales of cars from the manufacturer banned in all 50 states?

I think the law was put into place for a number of reasons. Partially to protect consumers. most of these laws are tied in to require a service department etc...It wouldn't be good if car companies just sold cars and left everyone on their own in terms of service and taking care of the car. It was probably put into place to prevent shade tree mechanics, and the like, thats my guess. It was also put into place so that these car companies would split some of the profit with franchises. It could be the thought that smaller franchises would do a better job of oversight on the small scale than the company can as a whole. A third possibility is that it was to promote competition and make sure that right price of cars are set.

There has always been an backlash to electric car manufacturers though. So it could be a way to deter tesla

You didn't answer my question. What is the reason they banned it in all 50 states? and they did this during the Henry Ford years as well. You don't think Henry Ford would of been against this?

what is the monopolistic nature of car dealerships? theres over 20,000 of them

It was also probably put into place because of henry ford and it just stuck around. A lot of laws were put into place in order to break up the monopoly he had during that time. Id have to look up the history of the law though. I'm really not sure just my guess.

Yeah, I don't know. I would imagine it's to boost employment and protect "small businesses". It also probably dates back to post WWII. I would also imagine there is more than adequate frame work in place to protect consumers now. Being a car guy I know that NJ has the least protections in place for consumers as far as buying cars go. Dealerships in NJ often conceal serious issues with cars, even rebuilt titles. I would never buy a car in NJ.

Many issues can be resolved remotely, but if your Model S does require in-person attention, you can bring it to a Tesla Service Center, schedule a Tesla Ranger visit, or have your car picked up in exchange for a loaner at no charge with our valet service.

I think this is really the answer. NJ is owned by the mob though. Cant even pump your own gas :heh:
everyone's aware of the benefits of dealerships :beli: i think we're all pointing out that the government hating on tesla is a :skip: move

I don't think its the government hating on tesla. I think its other manufactures pressuring the government to do something.
