Well. I was thinking about this, considering the weird public image disasters/melt downs of Miley Cyrus and Justin Beiber. I think as your original fan base grows older, your ability to gain many fans that are younger fades (pre teen), so to appeal to the growing peer fan group, you get tagged up and act bad ass and rebellious because that's what your first fans like now and they don't care for bubble gum shyt anymore. Plus tattoos are ridiculous mainstream and give a 'grown' image even if you are emotionally very young still.
