All these cryptic and vague messages, why not go “open source” and spill the beans like a true scientist? Tell us directly how companies are taking shortcuts, bypassing guidelines, breaking the law, etc. If you’re a true scientist or engineer, that’s your responsibility to the planet.

I think some people are actually just scared because they know they got vapor ware and grifting.

Basically: be a stand-up person, stand 10 toes down or just shut the fukk up. Everyone wants to be Tony Stark and it’s annoying.

This Chinese dude and his team kept their head down, kept working and kept moving then broke the world. Shared the work so everyone can see for themselves. No cut corners. Similar to famous scientists, physicists, mathematicians and engineers from the past, were very transparent.

if they remove the app from the app store, theres nothing stopping any other entity or developer from renaming the model and publishing the app to the app store.

just look at another countries attempt to ban an open source app. thats like trying to ban a recipe, completely unenforceable.

Yup, exactly. In the past, that’s not how science was done.

Many people don’t quite understand e=mc^2 was very close to being cracked by multiple people because of all the knowledge we knew about the relationship between those three properties. Same goes for General Relativity. Einstein barely “beat” other Physicists and Mathematicians to the punch. Special Relativity was his own breakthrough however and that’s that little extra that made dude legendary. However, things like Maxwell’s Equations was a big open collaboration founded on other people’s work. We all know about Richard Feynman’s Nobel Prize, but people don’t know he shares that Nobel Prize with a Japanese Physicist who got the same conclusion. Not to mention people used to SHARE the findings: the Biot-Savart Law was named after two physicists who worked together.

That’s the scientific process. Open Source which pushes open collaboration. Isaac Newton had a library in his room of books from Europe and the Middle East before coming up with Calculus and Newton’s Laws of Motion.

I’m guessing at some point countries got to competing in a major unhealthy fashion and now more about companies competing (for money) that things are so secretive and it gets wrapped up in national pride.

China went back to the basics of science and reset the game. People are claiming they used some things regarding what OpenAI has done and they did - that’s why they directly cited that in their research. You know, like scientists do and how science used to be done: collaboratively and building on knowledge already there. Einstein, James Clerk Maxwell, Isaac Newton, etc. didn’t start from scratch for their breakthroughs either so should DeepSeek have?

No matter what people say, none of it takes away from their breakthrough and them open sourcing it for everybody to now use and collaborate on to find more discoveries and engineer new tech for a fraction of the cost that we pay the “big boys”. The fact they stuck to fundamental principles of scientific inquisitiveness and sharing it for everybody was the extra that made this punch and as equally important when it’s all said and done.

Building a system that runs efficiently for EVERYONE is actually problem solving. Building a system that works only for a few people because it’s too complicated to solve the right way is problem avoidance - cut corners and half-ass. However, you want the credit like you solved the problem for everyone? No, you avoided all the constraints: you cheated, grifted, cut corners and scammed. Now you’re trying to sell it to people like it’s thorough and complete. Nope, way off and not even close.
