I mean I get what you're trying to do, but to anyone who's not actually downtown all the time, anything between 13th street and Water tower place and east of Ashland is "Downtown"
River North, south loop, west loop, Streeterville, greektown are all "downtown" to most people who aren't down here everyday. Hell even University village, and the Gold coast to most nikkas is "downtown".

Roosevelt and Michigan at night in the late 90's may as well have been a scene right out of the walking dead lol
I was in college at IIT from 98-2002 and had a homegirl renting a loft right by that burger king on 19 and Michigan with a roommate and they was paying like $800. It'd cost half a mill to buy that spot not even 10 years later.

Hell there was a place called chicago indoor paintball on Madison /Washington and Morgan back around 1999.
They were putting anything in those empty warehouses at one point lol Now people who bought condo's in the early 00's are selling them for crazy $$

My grandfather on my father’s side married three times. his second wife lived in Long Grove apartments on Michigan and Cullerton. My parents had maintained a city condo off of Wacker before they sold it and we’d go into the city from the burbs on the weekend and stay at the condo then go and have Sunday dinner with my grandfather and his second wife at Long Grove. This was in the early 90’s. The area over by Michigan and Cullerton (two blocks north of Cermak) was HOOD af. Long Grove was basically projects along with the Harold Ickes down the street. shyt was like you said, the walking dead over there. I just remember Long Grove and abandoned warehouses and buildings on Michigan between Cermak and Roosevelt. Night and day compared to today.

I think they’ve done some rehab to Long Grove but it, and the building behind it on 21st street, are the only buildings full of mostly black people. I think they are still low income and they’ve maintained them as such since the real estate prices are high in the South Loop. I think it would have been a big hoopla if they gentrified the buildings. Oh yeah, the Ickes still may be predominantly black too. The last remnants of old Chicago in that area.

That night club Y Tu was over there too by that Burger King on Michigan. That’s when they had that stair collapse or whatever that killed all them people at the club. I remember seeing images on the news of people stacked on top of each other screaming for help inside the window.

Eh, I thought the crime scene was north of there on Milwaukee and Grand. That’s on Kinzie and Milwaukee. Just a few blocks away and you at the Merchandise Mart. I can see people calling that downtown.

I would not call that area the West Loop. Definitely River West but definitely could see people saying downtown.

The cops that are here are lazy af to begin with and there isn’t many of em as far as I seen vs other areas in the city. One cop car ( with 2 cops ) isn’t going to be the first to the scene without back up when shots are fired, so they take their time.

Chicago layout makes it so that it’s difficult to catch a shooter that knows what theyre doing. Pop off, bend a few blocks, ditch the burner car, go on about your day…

At the end of the day, nikkas gonna have to fix this shyt. Only way the city / cops will step it up if the area is gentrifying….

It’s both. Cops are definitely lazy.

But I’ve also observed being on black college campuses out of state that have brought together blacks from all major cities, blacks from Chicago just have a certain aggression that I have not observed even from blacks that came from New York City, Detroit, Philly or Baltimore.

I don’t even know what it is to be honest. And it’s straight up sad because folks just be trying to chill, but Chicago nikkas was behind 80% of the drama on many of these campuses. I’m talking about TSU, Fisk, Lincoln, Lane, Lemoyne-Owen, Rust, Jackson State.
