My one quibble is that the British cast was speaking with their British accents and that was a little jarring at first, but I got over it.

real facts. even when characters try to use Russian accents, they suck. it took me about half an episode to retrain my mind though.

Is there a reason there are no gas masks in the power plant?

It was a nuclear plant not a ordinary power plant.

Gas masks are not going to protect from radiation especially at that level.

It's better than nothing...and nobody strapped up

It would stop you from breathing in the "fallout" that was flying all over the place, so it would have helped a lot.
However, the problem is, they all "officially" believed that the core COULD NOT blow up, so they couldn't even imagine a situation where there would be a danger of breathing in radioactive particles from the air. If it had been a "regular" meltdown, then the radiation probably wouldn't have been floating around in the air like that.

As for the guys going in the water, the masks they had on were diving masks (in case they had to dive underwater to complete their mission).

That, plus the firefighters spraying the roof down. All the water settled downward into the tanks in the lower levels of the plant.

Agreed. Thought it was a little odd that British actors were all over this. Doesn't look like there's a single Russian actor in this. Nevertheless, this is some very gripping storytelling thus far.
