Fenves is an academic. He's naturally not a football guy. He's more concerned about making Texas the Berkeley of the South. He's in Charlie's corner b/c he appreciates his core values and the professors on campus really love Strong.
This is what I'm trying to get into people's minds when they talk Texas. The UT system is trying to model itself after the U of California System and the people in charge are totally on board with that. Football school is not on the president's mind. Turning UT into Berkeley South and the UTD into UCLA academically is what they are concerned with. So you're left with the Big Money Donors trying to care about football, but all they do is fight. The first guy UT brass was after was David Shaw, then it was Jim Mora and Strong as 2a and 2b. The BMDs were after Saban. Our last president was of a similar vein and was also from Berkeley. They are far more concerned about building their medical school and adding research dollars to the point they are willing to just build a new arena because its in the way. If its up to them, Charlie Strong is exactly what they want as a coach. Winning football is gravy to the actual administration.
it was a solid hire at the time, im an advocate of giving college coaches 4 years but they have been poor this year. Cal is a shyt loss, program was 1-11 a few years you have to win that game as a ranked team. then losing by 3 scores to a decent Ok St team
i dont really see a shift in talent. the secondary is as bad as it was when he took over, and while early their '17 class doesnt look too exciting. Buechele has talent, doesnt seem to be ready. with OU being down this and Baylor having a scandal this was a year to gain ground, blew it
I will say for one, it's too early to talk about recruiting class. A month before NSD, Texas was in the 40s IIRC. On NSD, Texas finished at number 9. Strong's has indeed done a great job at Texas is his ability to close well with recruits.
Another problem I had with Soulcontroller's post is the point he made about "i dont really see a shift in talent. the secondary is as bad as it was when he took over". If UT's secondary was playing like it did in 2014, UT would be 4-0 right now.
Cal being 1-11 a few years ago under a different coaching staff has nothing to do with Cal in 2016. Cal looks like another Texas Tech to me. They can score on anybody in the country, but their defense is too garbage to ever win the conference.
Texas EASILY has more True Frosh/RS Frosh/True Soph starters than any other Power 5 conference program in the country:

Texas starts 12 (Buechele, Burt, Williams, Vahe, Shackelford, Omenihu, Hager, Jefferson, Wheeler, Davis, Hill and Jones)
Not only that. They have a True Frosh QB. This is why I picked Texas to only go 8-4 before the season, even though the have the most talent in the conference. The other Big 12 teams having their own issues DOES NOT negate all the youth Texas has in their 2-deep.
I agree with Soulcontrollar on Buchele. I don't care how good he looked in the Spring Game, if this is supposed to be a make or break season for Coach Strong, he shouldn't put all his eggs in a basket on a True Frosh QB. He should've been more aggressive going after a Grad Transfer/JUCO QB like Davis Webb.
EDIT:
People's expectations are out of wack if they think 8-4 is a failure for this season. Most people agreed before the season, that Coach Strong saves his job if he gets 8 wins.
Actually no. Louisville were willing to match. He wanted to be considered in the upper echelon of coaching jobs. HC of Texas sounds sexier than HC of Louisville.
