Black communities are policed demonstrably differently than white communities, despite no difference in the likelihood in either the possession, use or sale of illegal drugs.

There are a lot of non-police issues that contribute to the segregation, poverty and sense of hopelessness that contribute to crime. But that doesn't mean that the systemic problems in policing, and the way their authority is misused, isn't due for significant reform.

Defunding the police is about routing those dollars to other programs and social services that would be better equipped to handle a lot of situations that the police should not be doing.

That's what the idea is about.
It isn't about getting rid of the police.
