I kinda wonder what it's gonna take for JID to take that next step. Right now he's touring 1500-2500 capacity venues and not really selling records. What will it take to get him to semi amphitheater status for instance? Also I kinda wonder whether the old mixtape model was better than what we have now, where everyone is releasing albums early. Cole, Kendrick, Drake, KRIT, etc released multiple mixtapes before getting to their debut album. They built their fanbases and their stories until it was time for that official "first album." In each case, the album was heavily anticipated and marked a shift in their popularity. You could argue only Kendrick's debut lived up to expectations, but Cole and Drake sold a shyt ton of records too.

JID has already released multiple albums. Maybe times have changed and it doesn't matter, it's just music so who cares whether it's an album or mixtape? But then again when does he take that next step. There was a clear shift for Cole from The Come Up to The Warm Up, and an even bigger one when Friday Night Lights came out. Kendrick's shift from KLLP to OD was big, and then of course Section 80 was another thing. I don't get the impression JID's next album will be "the one" so after that...maybe he makes the move?

I love JID and EARTHGANG. I saw their tour they were on last year for the never been shyt tour and it was one of the best live shows I've seen. It was in a smaller venue so that added to it but JID is has the makings of a superstore. Charisma, witticism, lyrics, versatile talent and songs. He doesnt have a hype man when he performs so you can see how talented this dude is.

EARTHGANG will get more popular but I dont think will get that superstar push. They will have long careers and put out great music but you can tell they are heavily influenced by Outkast and are very aware of their aesthetic as much as their music. The first couple singles off their upcoming album seem like they are angling for more mainstream play. I hope they dont go the way of Big Krit and try and push their albums with radio singles that are never close to the best songs on the album. Because those singles usually dont attract new fans and disappoint their fan bae.

I don't see JID becoming a household name. He will have a nice long career and do well. He is selling out all the 1500-2500 type shows so he getting a decent checc. I was gonna see him out here in LA but he sold out two nights super quik. I just don't see what he can do to take the next step to be a bigger artist.....he might need to do a collab with a super established star(besides Cole). Breh super talented but i think ppl still see him as a Great Value Kendrick at times(which i get but isnt really true). If JID's gonna make it, the next project has to hit..otherwise he just gonna keep on his steady trajectory(which aint bad...you dont have to be a big name star to make consistent $$)

Earthgang is in the same boat....they are selling out the mid tier venues but again their album keeps getting pushed bac and I don't think their lane or style of music is going to resonate with the casuals and radio listeners. They the closest thing to Kast that we've had in a while but if Kast came out today, they wouldnt have blown up like they did in the 90s

Tbh all of Dreamville's roster is like that....they all basically in Double A or Triple A but just can't make that jump to the big leagues....not due to lack of talent. I like JID, Earthanga and Bas a lot but they just dont really fit the times to become big marquee names

I don't think that model never left. I think what changed was the marketing for mixtapes or whatever you want to call them today.

How people consume and make music has changed since then as well. Social media was just revving up so everybody had their eyes on what Cole, Kendrick, Wale, KRIT, etc were releasing. Nowadays, anyone not named Drake can release something and the casual fan won't hear or pay attention to it until a week after.

Agreed, the entire roster just seems like support characters. JID has star potential but you can't reach it without hits. TDE managed to get two artists besides Kendrick to blow up (Q and SZA) but that rarely happens with crews. Partynextdoor has had some success but outside of that OVO is a graveyard. And even with TDE...Q has fallen back to the minors and while SZA has the potential to go even farther with her next album...her personality/mental state could ruin everything.

Ain’t none of these nikkas really moving any units and that streaming bullshyt is all smoke and mirrors.

nikkas just need to focus on making good music and their fan base will continue to grow.

Honestly they're super talented but i dont see either becoming superstars. Also to keep it 100 i also think the only reason Cole signed JID was because of the Kendrick similarities. Cole has spoken about how he regrets not signing kendrick when he had the chance.

But they both can have great careers though.

Cole signing Kendrick? How? Kendrick was buzzing heavy and talking with Dre before Cole had even dropped his debut let alone had a label deal.

Back to the topic, Dreamville has a lot of talent on their roster but they dont seem to have the ability, nouse or connects to blow any of their artists up.

Ari Lennox just dropped a great album and I didnt even know it was dropping let alone had dropped until I saw Omen post about a beat he made on it.

JID has everything it takes to blow up but I don't know if it will happen while signed to Dreamville.

:stopitslime: wrong, wrong, and wrong. Cole has talked about this a lot. I mean A LOT. Which is why again i think he signed JID for the similiarities.

J. Cole: I Wanted to Sign Kendrick Lamar

Cole was introduced to the Compton MC in 2010 before either rapper had released their debut albums. “I met Kendrick at a time when all I had out was The Warm Up, nobody knew who he was, he didn’t have a deal,” he said. “He was signed to Top [Dawg]—I didn’t know he was signed to Top.”

But he immediately knew that K-Dot was a star. “I actually wanted to sign him, but I didn’t have my business right. I didn’t know he was with Top [Dawg],” explained Cole. “But in my mind, he was the first person I ever found. … I remember tellin’ everybody like, ‘Yo, I’m tryna sign this kid. Like yo, this ni**a’s nasty!'”

He even helped put Dr. Dre on to him. “When I was in the studio with Dre I had to tell Dre like, ‘Yo, you ain’t never heard of Kendrick?’
