Be honest, he was a nobody.
He got less radio play in the west , midwest, and south in the mid 90s than Kilo Ali and Raheem the Dream.
Stop it
"saying stop it" after providing zero facts is always funny in an argument. Facts are Jay-Z went gold and had a top 50 billboard hit in 1996 when both Pac and Biggie were alive. To say he was a "nobody" is just factually wrong. You can say he wasn't as big as them, that is very true. But to say he was some underground no name rapper is just not even worth debating. It's just not right. lol

Yeah he had songs, but you said albums.. pac also had songs mfs played on the first 3, but again you said albums, right?

Im saying X still had a wave until his fifth. You saying people stopped giving a fukk after album #3. But some of his biggest and most iconic songs are from album #4 and #5

Like 3 of the songs in my original post are from his 4th and 5tth album.

lol Jayz going gold and have a top 50 hit doesn't make him nationally relevant.
Crucial Conflict - Hay
Do or Die - Po Pimp
Master P - Ice Cream Man
All came out in 96 all albums and singles were bigger than Jay-Z.
We have to be honest and stop trying to inflate Jay-Z to a status he didn't have.

Ain't No was also a part of the Nutty Professor soundtrack which was HUGE. You're downplaying how big that single was

Nobody is inflating anything. I am stating a fact. Jay had a name during this era. That's all. Saying someone had a bigger name don't take away from Jay's status at the time. That's like saying G Herbo ain't a name now because Durk is more popular. That's not how it works. Jay was popular in his own right during this time, that's all I'm saying.

I was in HS so basically really in tune with what was going on and I have to say the same. Jay didn't BLOW UP BLOW UP until "Can I Get A..." He went into the stratosphere with that one.

He was hot with Vol 1 but it was Vol 2 that got him into pop artist mainstream. Before that Jay was rap scene hot but still a tier under the biggest rap names.

It wasn't the biggest song in the soundtrack, he had bigger soundtrack songs for Rush Hour than Nutty Professor.

Montell Jordan - I Like
Case - Touch Me, Tease Me,
Az Yet - Last night were the big songs from the soundtrack

Y'all not saying the same thing. If he was saying what you was saying we wouldn't be having an argument. lol I agree with your assessment. It's accurate. But he's basically saying Jay had no status whatsoever in the mid 90s outside of NY, when he had a single that literally got video play on nationwide TV multiple times a day and as @Knicksman20 mentioned was on the soundtrack to one of the biggest movies that year.

It was HUGE lol! Foxy was also on Touch Me Tease Me. Anyone that was around back then will tell you Ain't No was a big hit & with the Nutty Professor soundtrack behind it, it got pushed further
