I hate lifting weights. Never could bench more than 200lbs, but I'm generally one of the strongest dudes in my social circle when practically applied IE sports and such.
OP is correct. Body weight exercises is what got me on point. Didn't really have time to hit the gym because of work and don't have a vehicle at the moment. Got me a pull-up bar and along with some other exercises put in work.

I don't know about calisthenics specifically but I haven't touched weights for over 2 yrs and I'm physically in great shape. Squats, pushups, dips, spidermen, tucks, burpees, bags, hops, lunges and a few other exercises for 45mins x 3 times a week. So in a roundabout way I co-sign this thread, just work with your body weight, it's all you need
This is all at a boxing gym btw, my trainer told me to forget doing freeweights and just stick to interval circuit training/pad work/bags/sparring. He was right, been saving £60 p/month on my gym membership and am comfortably stronger & leaner than I've ever been, 2 years into this with no fall off

My dude who I was incarcerated with did nothing but calisthenics for his whole bit,I did 6 years and he was in before me so I think he did 7 or 8,but he was 6'0 235 did crazy calisthenics and no weights and could bench 405 for 3 reps,I kid you not
