Itās worth nothing that the scheme we got from Waldron ā what Thomas Brown is being forced to use as well ā isnāt what we likely expected when he was hired.
It was expected that we would get a Shanahan/McVay-type West Coast offensive system with Waldron, a lot of outside zone, 11 personnel, etc.
Instead, Waldron ended up going back to his roots and installing more of the modified Erdhart-Perkins system that was popular under Charlie Weis when he served as the Patriotsā OC back in the early 2000s. Waldron spent 3 years under Weis at Notre Dame, then 2 years in New England afterwards.
If youāre wondering why players may have struggled with lining up and knowing their routes, itās because instead of receivers focusing on learning their responsibilities in their role, they have to learn entire concepts, because their responsibilities change depending on where they line up. Meaning any one concept changes depending on the formation or alignment.
Keep in mind, the TEs and RBs are likely held to this same standard, and itās possible this is why Kmet lost snaps to Everett (someone more familiar with the system), why guys like Herbert and Scott lost playing time (likely struggling with the playbook), why thereās been so many communication issues that have been alleviated by going to a simpler version.
Itās also why you still sometimes see things like Kmet getting bubble screens where the WRs are blocking ā the play isnāt designed FOR Kmet, itās designed for the receiver in that position. Itās why you see guys on certain sides of the formation get missed even if theyāre open, because Caleb has to effectively choose the side he likes based on the look.
